“Do you need to go?” she asked, laughter in her eyes.

He rubbed the spot she’d hit, not that it hurt. “Nah, she said I should stay and do this.” He took a breath.

Had a woman ever encouraged him the way Sabine did?

He couldn’t ever remember if anyone had.

They liked the things his occupation could provide for them, but they seemed irritated that he had to be gone so often. Not just on tour, or at the studio, but if an idea hit him, he would leave whatever party or event they were at so he could get the ideas down. His writing interrupted a lot of his relationships.

A thought occurred to him and he focused on Zara. She tilted her head like she knew this wasn’t going to be a small question.

“You’re in a pretty serious relationship, right?” he asked. He wished for the first time in his life he paid attention to the gossip rags.

“Hmm,” Zara hummed. “Are you asking for advice, padawan?”

His mouth split into a wide smile. “Nice.” Of course, she was a Star Wars fan.

Zara sighed and looked around the control room. She waited for them to be alone again before she spoke.

“What if you take her out for dinner?” Zara suggested.

“Like a date?”

“Notlikea date. An actual date.” She blinked at him. “I know this awesome Italian restaurant here in town.If someone recognizes you it would be a patron not a pap. It’s a small, easy way to make moves into the public without sacrificing your privacy.”

“But,” and he felt like this was obvious, “We’re not officially dating.”

If looks could melt, Dave’s head would look like that guy at the end ofRaiders.

“If you ask her on a date, and she says yes, you’re officially dating. It’s not that complicated.” She patted his shoulder and walked away. “Let’s get this done, I have a plane to catch,” she called over her shoulder.

Hm. Maybe he’d been overthinking it.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

He pulled out his phone, drafted a text, deleted it and started over.

Shit.

This was harder than he expected.

How do you ask a woman you really like, and maybe even more than like, to have dinner with you in public, while also not coming across like you’retellingher to have dinner with you?

He wanted her to feel free to say no.

But when he tried putting that into text it sounded like he didn’t want her to say yes.

“Zara!” he called, going back into the studio. She started this.

He needed help.

He needed so much help that he was rethinking asking her at all.

SABINE

“So you’re really not going to tell me what you two talked about last night, huh?” Sabine asked through narrowed eyes as she held her glass of wine up to her lips.
