Kara shook her head but she maintained that mischievous look in her eyes. “I told you everything.”

“You dick,” Sabine said, chuckling. “All you said was you made him tea and talked about me.”

Kara shrugged. “All true.”

“I hate you.”

“No, you don’t.” Kara stretched her long legs out on the couch and pointed her toes. “Should we talk about him? Specifically, how you feel about him?” She arched an eyebrow at Sabine.

“I…I don’t know.”

Kara snorted. “Liar.”

Sabine studied the pink liquid in her glass. “I don’t know what else to say.”

Kara sighed and they sat in silence for a few minutes.

“I think if I knew how he felt maybe it would make it easier for me to know what I feel.”

“Bullshit.”

Both girls giggled.

“How am I supposed to know anything? Honestly? You want to know how I honestly feel?” Sabine sat up and set her glass of wine on the ottoman.

“No, I want you to lie to me some more.” Kara rolled her eyes.

Sabine clasped her hands in her lap. “I’ve never known anyone like him. Let alonedatedsomeone like him. He’s sweet and sincere, and funny.” The pressure in her heart squeezed a bit as she thought about him. She didn’t allow herself to think about him too much because sometimes that pressure in her chest felt too big to carry. Inexplicably, her eyes began to burn. “He doesn’t ask me to be or act like anything. He just lets me be who I am. And Ilikewho I am when I’m with him. He makes me feel like…myself.”

Kara tilted her head, her eyes shining with emotion. “Maybe that’s all you need to know.”

Sabine bit the inside of her cheek and blinked away the moisture in her eyes. “His life is very big.” The words felt thick in her throat.

Kara nodded.

“And he hasn’t made any declarations. I don’t feel comfortable considering whether or not his life is one I want to join with mine. It feels so presumptuous.”

Because a conversation about intention felt like such a commitment. Which she knew he wasn’t a fan of. He hated being boxed in.

“I’m worried that I’ve been trying to play it so cool I’ve led him to believe that I’m cool with casual.”

There it was.

She’d finally found the words.

“And how I feel for him isnotcasual.” She swallowed and swiped at the single tear that had finally escaped. “But we’ve known each other for just a couple months. That’s not long enough for anyone to know what they want.”

Kara shrugged. “I don’t know about that,” she said cryptically.

Sabine narrowed her eyes at her best friend.

Kara finished her glass and stood up. “Refill?”

Sabine blocked the way by sticking her leg out. “After you tell me what you mean by that.”

Kara cocked a hip and her lips twitched. “You said it yourself, babe. He’s not like other people. Time moves differently in his mind. You’re just going to have to talk to him.”

Sabine let her leg drop back to the floor as Kara’s words sank in. She was going to have to ask Dave how he felt. And if what they were doing was not casual.
