She contemplated downing it like a shot but didn’t.

“Sabine Debois,” Quinn started. “Your mother Adrienne Debois stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from several of my current and former clients.”

And Sabine’s guard went up.

“I’ll tell mom you say hi,” she replied flatly.

If Dave brought her here to make her pay for her mom’s sins, she was not going to be smiling at him for a while.

Dave reached over and took her hand.

“I understand she stole your identity for a short time as well.”

Sabine didn’t reply. She just blinked at the man in the suit.

Head of security, huh?

Did she fail the background check for dating Sunshine Capone? Was that the new thing he was doing since his last girlfriend turned out to be an arsonist?

Quinn studied her. “You’ve altered your appearance slightly. You used to look more like her.”

“Well, when you get arrested in front of your friends at the Statue of Liberty you take the hint.” She’d lightened her hair by several shades and had gotten a new nose.

“I understand that you applied to be a teacher at the community college. Can you speak about that?”

Sabine cast a look to Dave who nodded his encouragement.

“Yeah. I applied, and they said because I didn’t pass the background check, they wouldn’t be hiring me.”

“You make a decent living tutoring, no?” Quinn asked, his eyes on the paper in front of him.

Was he looking at her tax returns?

“It’s not about the money,” she found herself saying. “I like teaching.”

She licked her lips and glanced to Dave again. He hadn’t taken his eyes off her.

“Teaching is a part of who I am. I like leading people to the places where they can take over their own lives. I believe education is the fastest and best way to unlock someone’s freedom.” She glanced at Dave again. “I’m not a brave person by nature, but I like surrounding myself with brave people.” She looked back at Quinn and Alex. “And people who want to learn are the bravest people. In my opinion.”

Quinn’s lips twitched and he made the slightest motion for Alex to take over.

“Dave asked us to scrub your record. We should be finished in a few days. You’ll be able to apply for any job anywhere you want, and Adrienne Debois’ criminal record will not be attached to you in any way.”

And for the second time that day, her mouth fell open.

Dave squeezed her hand.

After a beat she found her voice. “You can do that?”

“I have people who can do that,” Quinn not really clarified. “But it can’t be public knowledge. This was a personal request that I decided was worthy of… bending some things.”

Was what they did not entirely legal?

She didn’t want to know.

She cleared her throat and swallowed. “I would be happy to sign something that says I will be quiet for the rest of my life.”

Quinn passed her the file folder and a pen.
