“I love you,” she whispered against his mouth. She kissed him again.

“I love you.” She kissed his cheek.

“I love you.” Kissed his other cheek.

“I love you.” Kissed the tattoo above his eyebrow.

“I love you.” Kissed his nose.

“I love you.” Kissed the rose tattoo.

“I love you.” Kissed his chin.

“I love you.” Kissed his top lip.

“I love you.” Kissed his bottom lip.

She climbed into his lap and straddled him. He settled his hands lightly on her hips. She grabbed his face in both hands.

“I love you,” she said. “Deeply. For who you are.”

He sucked in a deep breath and blinked like he was surprised. “Really?” he asked. “Even the—” He waved a hand to encompass all of his unspoken fears.

“Yeah, really. All of it.” She wiped a tear off his cheek with her thumb.

“But I do things that don’t make sense.”

She leaned forward and brushed her lips against his because it needed to happen again. She looked at him seriously. “I’m not afraid of things I don’t understand.”

He took in a shuddering breath.

“Dave, you are my hero,” she said, gazing at the face that she adored. “You have this incredible, tender heart. It’s so big and brave. You make me think I can be brave too. You open up my world to new things every day. The moment you walked into my life you started saving me. And you never stopped.”

His hands moved from her hips to her back and he breathed easier.

She kissed his forehead. Then his nose. Then his chin.

“I love you,” she said, resting her forehead against his and closing her eyes.

“I’m very sensitive.” It was an admission that was part trying to add levity and mostly true.

“I like that you’re sensitive.”

“I’m crying in the hallway like a little bitch.”

She sat back so she could see his face again. “Only bad bitches cry.”

His lips twitched and she brushed them with her thumb.

“I overreacted,” he said, his eyes getting wet again. He swallowed.

She shrugged. “It’s okay to be afraid sometimes. Next time, tell me, and we can be afraid together.”

He blinked hard, and she watched him wrestle with that information. “Really?” he finally asked, his voice breaking.

She nodded and he wrapped his arms fully around her and crushed her to him. He buried his face in her neck and held her for several long minutes.

It was warm and safe and whole in his arms.
