He had slept like a damn baby—as usual when he was with Sabine.

It was like peace was just a part of her essence. She bestowed it on anyone and everyone around her.

His arm drifted across the bed only to find it empty.

Hm.

Maybe she was using the bathroom.

Maybe he should jump in there right after her.

And then maybe he could talk her into coming back to bed.

Or not.

Her brother was sleeping in Kara’s room. And even though he’d had enough wine last night to make a Real Housewife blush, Dave wasn’t comfortable putting the moves on his girl with her brother in the same loft.

No. He wanted to be able to take his time.

And he especially didn’t want any distractions.

Not with Sabine.

Never.

She deserved all his focus.

Her brother had been an exceptional cooler last night, which was why they had only kissed a little and no heavy petting.

Which wasn’t as bad as you might think.

The bathroom was empty when he got there so he used it, and then went on a quest to find the most beautiful girl in the world.

It was a short quest.

She was standing in the kitchen in a short emerald-green robe and matching fuzzy slippers. She’d taken her hair out of its braids the night before and it hung in kinky, fluffy curls down her back.

He was so distracted by the sight of her that it took him an extra second to realize what she was doing.

She bent her knees and peered at an object on the counter in front of her. Then she went back to the paper instructions in her hand.

He came up behind her and slid his arms around her waist, tucking his chin in the space between her neck and shoulder.

“Is that an espresso machine?” he asked.

“Yes,” she grumbled. “I was trying to surprise you. But apparently, I’m not talented enough to figure out how this thing works.”

His heart warmed and grew inside his chest.

She had gotten him an espresso machine. Not for her. Not for any other reason than she remembered he had a weird obsession with espresso.

He couldn’t remember someone ever getting something for him without him actually paying for it.

It was so simple and gloriouslynormal. Except he knew that nothing about the way Sabine cared for him was normal. It was extraordinary and powerful and he could feel it shifting his fears to the side.

He drew her body as close to his as he could and inhaled the scent of her.

Emotion clogged his throat.
