Sometimes she could follow the breadcrumbs back to where things had changed.

This was not one of those times.

She was going to have to ask.

“Can you please be more specific with your request?” she asked gently.

His eyebrows lifted like he just realized he’d given no context. “Oh, for sure. Sorry. I was still thinking about Halloween.”

“Ohh.” That tracked.

“I was thinking that if you had one good experience—”

She was already shaking her head.

“Just wait,” he repeated. “What if we compromise?”

“We?” She arched an eyebrow.

“What if we dress up in fun costumes, hand out candy to kids, and still lock all the windows and pray for dawn.”

She snorted a laugh because when he said it, it did sound ridiculous.

“I’m not having a party.” Never again. She loved her loft. It was pretty and clean, and she wasn’t going to invite a bunch of drunk assholes over to ruin her sanctuary.

“Of course, not a party.” He shook his head like the idea was horrendous. “Just me, you, a bucket of candy, and the rosary.”

“I’m not Catholic,” she replied with a reluctant smile.

He shrugged one shoulder. “I haven’t been Catholic in years so I’ll just follow your lead then.” He dug his phone out of his pocket and handed it to her. “Put in your information. I’ll text you and talk you into it.”

What was happening?

She took the phone and stared at him.

“You’re serious?” she asked, not quite sure how far he’d take his ridiculous joke.

Because it had to be a joke.

Right?

“Yes. And you better have a good costume because I have a doozy. And Iwillmake fun of you if yours sucks.” He leaned forward and tapped on his phone screen. “Hurry up. I know you have to leave soon.”

She shook her head once and darted a look to Piper and Shawn who were watching with fascination.

Sabine typed in her information in a dazed fog. This seemed like a bad idea.

So why was her stomach making little happy flips inside?

Dave took his phone back and stood. He held his hands up and Piper passed him the ball. He bounced it a few times on the wood floor. “I love the floors in this building.”

“Johnny installed them himself,” Piper provided.

Sabine’s alarm on her watch went off and she gathered her things.

“Send me that essay—”

“I know, I know. You’ll go over it tonight.” Piper fluttered her eyelashes. “I’m not a total noob anymore.”
