No, she didn’t.

Not likethat.

Sure, she liked him as a human and as an artist. But she didn’tlikehim like him.

“It doesn’t seem like a date.” Kara sighed and tossed the phone back on the bed. She crossed her cheetah print covered arms and tilted her head. “I can stay, you know.”

Sabine rolled her eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous. You love working on Halloween.” Kara always dressed up cool and made mad tips. She didn’t mind the drunks and the gore that came with the holiday. She also never tried to convince Sabine to join and Sabine never tried to convince Kara to skip it.

Sabine stuck another bobby pin in her braid to keep it pinned back.

Kara’s phone pinged. “That’s my ride.” She moved to the front door and Sabine followed, her long black cape billowing out behind her.

“It’s cool though, right?” Sabine asked, doing a twirl in her costume.

Kara’s lips twitched and her eyes shone with that sweet adoration that can only come from a friend who loves you despite the choices you make.

“It’s very cool.”

“Yeah, it is,” Sabine agreed quietly.

If nothing else, it had been fun to dress up. Even if Dave didn’t show, Sabine was going to watch Star Wars and eat the candy by herself.

Kara put on her coat and hugged Sabine. “I’ll be home by three.”

“I will be waiting for you.”

Just because Sabine understood that Kara liked Halloween didn’t mean that she would relax until her friend was home safe and sound.

Kara left and Sabine went back to her room to put on the finishing touches. She was going to wait to put the helmet on until Dave texted that he was on his way up.

She put the gloves on, slid the lightsaber into the belt, and stared at herself in the mirror.

“I look so fucking cool,” she whispered.

Her phone pinged and she caught her grin in the mirror before reaching for her phone.

So she was excited. So what?

DAVE: I’m in the elevator

Sabine slid the helmet on and rushed to the door.

She listened to the elevator arrive followed by footsteps down the hall.

He knocked and she opened the door.

She wasn’t sure what she was expecting; both of them had kept their costumes a secret.

But his was not as elaborate as hers. If it could even be considered a costume. He looked like he was in his pajamas.

“What the hell?” she blurted, disappointment and embarrassment rushing through her.

Except she’d switched on the voice filter, so it came out sounding like James Earl Jones.

Dave’s chuckle started small and grew larger. Until he was belly laughing in her hallway.

She took the helmet off and glared at him.
