Squaring her shoulders, she met Sly’s empty gaze, purposefully pouring hatred into her own.

“Don’t worry about it, Mr. White. I’ll show myself out. You don’t have to worry about seeing me here—or anywhere else—ever again,” she spat, her voice cracking as the fire of humiliation ravaged through her.

At her words, his emerald eyes widened for a fraction of a second, fear flashing in his eyes for just a moment before his expression was cold and blank once more.

She hadn’t been brave enough to put a name to the fear she’d been feeling pricking at the back of her mind, but that didn’t stop it from happening. For weeks, since she’d finally given in to Sly’s seductions and promises, she’d been worried—terrified—that she wouldn’t be enough for him, that she wouldn’t meet up with his expectations of a woman to share his life with. That she couldn’t compare in some way to the woman he’d married. And now, faced with the choice between defending her and comforting her, he’d dismissed her. He’d been faced with a choice between the Latina nobody and the classy, gorgeous, Insta model he’d spent five years resenting. But, apparently, that resentment wasn’t as strong as he’d made her believe. Maybe his love for his wife was still there, beneath it all, and Sally was just a placeholder for who he really wanted to be with.

Because he’d chosen.

And it wasn’t her.

Hurrying from the house, then slamming the car door behind her, Sally held the tears in check until the house she’d foolishly allowed herself to think of as home was out of sight.
