Sally snorted. “That’s not true, but I am one badass bitch, and I can see you sitting there, crushing on someone, don’t think I can’t see it in your face.” She leaned in, pointing a manicured finger at Maeve’s suddenly too warm face. “Whoever he is, give him the best you, the one who is brave and confident, and loves herself—lumps, bumps, and all.”

The answer came to her then.

If she wanted AJ, she had to stop letting fear ruin everything. The emails were no longer enough for either of them, and she couldn’t spend the rest of her life having a relationship that required internet access. AJ was so patient, so understanding, and so very eager to meet her. He was everything to her…and he deserved the best she could offer him.

Sucking in a deep breath, holding it so long she could feel her lungs burning, and then letting it out in a rush, Maeve strengthened her resolve.

“Okay.”

The answering squeals made every head in the bar turn in their direction.

“Fuck yeah!” Sally shouted.

Rather than tuck her head in her chest and pray for invisibility as she usually would in such a situation, Maeve sat up, grinned, and laughed with her friends.

FROM THE DESK OF AJ MENDEZ

December 2nd

Swan…where have you been? I haven’t heard from you in a couple of days. I’m worried about you. I got your cookies this morning. Let’s just say the courier wasn’t all the happy when I practically held him captive to ask him invasive questions about who sent the package. He couldn’t give me anything other than it was paid for using a credit card and, of course, he couldn’t give me any information on the name on the account.

The cookies are delicious—even better than Lisana made. Is there love in those cookies?

I hope so. I really hope so.

When we finally meet, I’ll make you a special dinner. Just the two of us. Candlelight, chilled champagne, and so much fucking love in the food.

My business partner thinks I’m nuts for eating something from someone I never met, but I have met you. My soul has met yours. My match. It is my body that still requires a hands-on introduction. LOL.

Please…respond. If emailing has become a hassle, you can call me. You have my number. I would give anything to hear your voice. Text me, which is quicker and more personal than emailing—in my opinion. I don’t care how you reach out, just don’t ghost me. Please. Don’t disappear on me.

I will take anything from you I can get.

I miss you.

Forever Yours,

AJ
