Chapter Thirty-Six

My daughter is as defiant as she was at six years old. A trait that made me want to throttle her back then and, apparently, still does. If Gray hadn’t interfered, she would also have a few holes in her legs.

Never go for the vital body parts; that's what growing up where I did taught me. I rub a palm over the outside of my right thigh, remembering that particular incident. I was fourteen and had to make up excuses for weeks about why I couldn't join Heather at the pool and skipped P.E. One more reason he got what he deserved in the end.

I pour another glass as Gray walks in.

"If my husband is not enough incentive for Lilly to sign over what should’ve been mine long ago, we will take other measures." I don’t turn as I speak.

"Yours?" His question makes me clench the bowl of the wine glass.

"Ours," I correct myself. I really can’t deal with one of his tantrums right now.

He lets it go and switches gears. "Have you heard from your little bitch?"

Hank–the informant–Todd.

"No. He is still in Paris with Nate." I neglect to tell Gray that Hank should've given me an update yesterday, but my messages have been unanswered.

I need to speed things up.

Facing Gray, I tap my index finger to my lips. "How many paralytics do we have left?"

His eyes shoot up, and he opens and closes his mouth a few times. "You want to paralyze her?"

Why is he so shocked? We both have done worse over the years. Well, mostly him. That’s why he’s here.

I pull up one shoulder. "Just her legs. She might be more inclined to comply if she thinks she is in mortal danger."

"Is she?" He eyes me skeptically.

Heat surges through my body. "What do you care? It’s not like you can claim the father-of-the-year award. When have you last spoken to either of them?"

Gray's nostrils flare. He doesn't like when I bring them up. After all, he left them behind for me.

"Get the drugs," I bark at him.

After a moment of hesitation, he turns and storms to his bedroom. Spineless idiot.

I face the sliding glass door and take in the ocean. It’s not as blue as at home, but good enough for the few days I have to endure this place.
