“You don’t pack a lunch?”

“I did the first day. But he brought me a sandwich, so I haven’t been, because I didn’t want to pack a lunch and waste either that or the sandwich he made me.”

“He’s been making you sandwiches?” Shasta began, exchanging a glance with Sadie. “Are you going to admit that there’s something more going on than just you being in the library filing books?”

Peyton shook her head. “I don’t want there to be anything more. I won’t allow there to be anything more. I told you. I like him. I’m curious about him. I’m definitely intrigued, and I do think he’s a good man. I think he went through a hard time, and it made him angry and bitter, and he’s realizing now that’s not the way he wants to be. So yeah, that’s interesting to me. But I’m not looking for another relationship. It’s not going to happen.”

She was as firm as she could be. But she was also being honest. Because there was something about Bryce that was different than other men she knew. Something that pulled her toward him, in a way she couldn’t explain. She definitely didn’t mind spending time with him and wouldn’t mind spending more.

The bell over the door rang as someone walked in, and she pushed out of her seat.

“Are we ever going to meet him?” Sadie asked as she stood.

“I don’t know. Maybe. I think he’ll start getting out soon.”

Something told her that he just needed some time to pull away and heal. That his healing was almost complete, and just as soon as he got his mind going in the right direction...then she bet he would be out.

“Maybe he’ll go to one of Owen’s baseball games? That’s his sport, right?”

“Yeah. He used to be a professional player.” She closed her mouth. “But he hasn’t really said much of anything about that. And I haven’t asked him.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t know. I guess I just didn’t think he’d be interested in watching some kid he doesn’t even know.”

Not to mention he didn’t go out at all.

Yet.

“You should. It would be good for him to get out, and it might be good for you. It definitely would be good for Owen. To have someone cheering him on.”

“Maybe after his daughter leaves,” Peyton said, shrugging her shoulders. She didn’t want to ask a man she barely knew to come see her son play, even if baseball was his sport.

Or maybe she just needed to think about it and see if she thought that was a good idea. Because part of her really loved the idea of spending more time with him, especially since he would be so knowledgeable. It would be fun to sit beside him again and listen to his thoughts. There was something really fascinating about listening to someone talk about something they were good at and experiencing it with them.

She’d have to think about it, she decided as she waved to her friends and walked away from the table, heading behind the counter and greeting the couple that had walked in.

Actually, the more she thought about him, the more she loved that idea.
