“But I can’t control anyone else!” She opened her eyes, knowing she probably looked tortured, and she didn’t mean to be dramatic, but she couldn’t help it. “I can’t make my husband do anything. I can’t make him have character. I can’t make him stay true. I can’t make him be kind or nice. I can’t make him love me.”

There was the problem. Her ex had left her. He’d taken great delight in telling her to her face that he didn’t love her and never had. It had been painful. Maybe one of the most painful experiences of her life, because she loved him.

She’d been the best wife she could be. She’d given him everything she had. If he couldn’t love her after she’d given him so much, how could anyone?

“You’re right. You admitted yourself that you chose him and you didn’t pray about it. Didn’t ask God what you should do, you just went ahead. Am I right?”

She nodded. She let out a shaky breath. “And I know you’re right when you said that it would probably be different if I asked God what I should do and waited to get an answer from Him.”

“So there’s no need to be afraid. Because you know that what God put in front of you is what you need to do. No matter how hard or how painful it might be. Because those hard things and those trying people make us better? Someone told me that not long ago. Someone very wise.”

He smiled a little, and she had to grin back. Nothing like having her words thrown up in her face.

“So, maybe we can take things slow? And both of us will talk to the Lord about what He wants us to do. Deal?”

Her heart swelled. This was the kind of man she wanted. Someone who encouraged her to become a better Christian. Someone who lifted her up. Someone who made her want to do the same and more for him, because he helped her become better.

That was the kind of man she wanted to be married to. And that was the kind of woman she wanted to be for her husband. Someone who made him a better man.

Chapter 20

Good communication. - Alyson in Texas

Owen eyed Kendrickwho walked beside him. He walked slowly, wanting to give his mom as much time with Kendrick’s dad as he could.

He hadn’t realized until he’d come over and seen Kendrick’s sad face that maybe his playing with Mr. Bryce had upset her.

She hadn’t seen her dad for a long time, and maybe she wanted to spend time with him.

Owen could relate. Sometimes when his dad would come over to eat and bring his new girlfriend and their kids, Owen resented the other kids that were there because they took his dad’s attention from him.

He didn’t really think that Mr. Bryce was the same as his dad, though.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have wanted his mom to get together with him.
