“We? Are you saying I won’t be digging my nails into a stranger’s hand during the plane’s takeoff or that I won’t be taking selfies with the Scottish cows by myself?”

“I’m saying I want to do everything with you. Let’s work together – here and at home. Let’s buildourhome. Move in with me. Renovate the beach house as you dreamed it would be. Stand beside me while I raise two young women and maybe help me raise them too. I sure know I do need the help and they need a female figure in their life.”

I inched back a little, feigning refusal. “No. I can’t be their step-mother. Me and your girls are going to be friends. Didn’t they tell you?”

“Alright, fair enough. But there’s more.”

“More?”

“The best part.” Sam tugged my body into his and wrapped his arms around my waist. “The future.Ourfuture together.”

The words alone elicited a sigh. Oh, Sam. My arms snaked around his back as I settled my chin on his chest and continued to listen.

“Promise me you’ll kiss me every day.”

“Only if you promise me you would.”

“We’ll kiss and we’d smile often and be happy.”

“Even happier than I am now?”

“Mhm, and we’d be even happier after dinners. The ones we’d cook together. Then after, I’d go play ball with our little boys and you’ll put our daughter to sleep. And later, you and I will go to bed and give our best shot at getting them another brother or sister.”

Oh, what a hypothetical idyllic dream.

My hand reached out to touch his cheek and caress him there. “Will our kids have your beautiful eyes too?”

“All of them.”

I laughed. “Gosh, I’m going to be in so much trouble. If they’d look like you, I would have to start shooing girls away from my porch from the day my boys are born.”

“Like I don’t have to scare boys away from our girl as beautiful as her mama.”

“Just one girl?”

“Or two. Or three. I don’t mind a big family, which by the way reminds me, my mama wanted me to invite you for dinner.”

“Did she now?” Of course, she would. She must have assumed I was her son’s secret sweetheart that night at the dance. “You didn’t tell her about our frolicking at the office, did you?”

“Oh, she knows and she still loves you. She can’t wait to meet you again. And my girls feel the same way too. In fact, I think Luna has some questions pilled up for you already.”

“About theirpapa?”

“Worse. She’s into mixology. She wants you to teach her everything you know.” Sam’s face contorted with his lack of enthusiasm.

“So you did tell them about me, huh?” I couldn’t resist goading in knowing he didn’t just share my real name or my favourite fragrance with them. If he had told them that mixology detail, image what else he must have shared.

Sam shrugged a shoulder, defeated. “I had to. They interrogated me aboutma chérie.”

Knowing he wanted to share me with his closest people brought me immense joy.

“What about you?” Sam asked me. “Do you want the big family?”

Maybe I had never admitted it before, but I might have been jealous of Sam’s family sometimes. Now that I had been informally invited to join that beautiful family, it was a privilege and a pleasure. To extend the family with more kids though…

“It’s my new dream.” I admitted without any hesitation. “Although I’d prefer a few years just you and me first. We’ve got a lot of overdue make-up sex. Plus you owe me a date. And a dance.”

“And you owe me a quickie in my office.” There was Sam’s wicked smirk that I missed so much.
