“I do?”

“Mhm. It’s on my bucket list. Bullet point number five. We got to share our goals, right? Help each other fulfil our dreams.”

Sam released me from his latch. Then surprised me with a curtsey as he extended a hand in invitation. “A dance, milady?”

I accepted his hand and happily returned into his arms. This time, our hands were steady in one another’s, our distance was closed and our gaze never wavered. We danced to the silent blissful song until we were lost in our own entire world.

“You know what I’m thinking?” Sam questioned.

“Hm,” was my curt reply. Why did you interrupt this wonderful moment, Sam?

“I have an idea to get a headstart on that joined list. How about we go to my office, get that quick, steamy errand out of the way, then I’d drive you home, we’d get dressed and then I’d take you to the best date of your life. Afterwards, I’d drive you to the beach house for the night and there would be lots of make-up sex. Against the front door, on the kitchen floor, maybe on the bed too. And the next morning, we’d go for a walk on the beach while you sip your favourite lavender coffee. Then we lay on the sand, covered beneath my big coat and I’d touch you inappropriately. Same as I would touch you now if we were in another room and didn’t have an audience watching us.”

I didn’t break my eye contact with him. I didn’t want to descend from our imaginary utopia. “They’re still there, aren’t they?”

“Yep.” He didn’t divert his attention either. He kept leading me to sway in our slow dance. His face lowered into my hair cascaded over my shoulder and he whispered in my ear. “So. What do you say? Is it a date?”

“There’s just one small problem.”

“As long as I got you in my arms, there are no problems at all.” He brought our joined hands closer between our bodies.

“You forgot you can’t drive. Suspended license, remember?” I hate to bring that unfateful accident back into the conversation.

“That’s not a problem at all. I know a very friendly chauffeur who’s got a nicer car than mine was. No leather seats though. I know you don’t like them.”

“Whatever you want, I want that too, sunshine. I want all in with you.”

“All in. Glad to hear that.” Sam ended our dance right there and then, and he walked away. That wasn’t the reaction I was hoping for.

Sam picked up his suit jacket from the chair where he left it and returned to stand before me. “Going all in, that’s my bullet point number one.” He dropped his jacket to the floor, the gesture making me look down at his hands, right before he lowered down on one knee. In his hand extended toward me was a tiny box with the most stunning sapphire ring I’d ever seen.

My hand slapped over my mouth to hide my gaping mouth. To say I was in awe was an absolute understatement. There I was just an hour ago, almost pissing my pants, shaking like a leaf just because I was facing the man who I had let get away and thought I lost forever. Now there he was, kneeling before me with his eyes glimmering with hope.

“How long have you had that?” My voice came out in a whisper over the lump in my throat.

“Too long. Got that from Iceland too. I intended to give it to you five days ago but…”

My mind counted back the days. “You mean at the hotel?”

“Mhm.”

“But you barely talked to me.”

“Like I said, I’ve been a coward.” Sam chuckled nervously. “Mama found it in my jacket when we went home and she told my dad and the girls. You have no idea of the scolding I got for chickening out.”

I kept looking at him, waiting for his reason.

Sam shrugged a small shoulder. “I thought… I thought…”

“You thought my goodbye was forever. You thought that just because I was miles away from you, I stopped dreaming about you.” I crouched down to match his height, cupped his face in my hands and touched his forehead with my own. “Dreaming of you was all I had left of you.”

The blissful sigh that released from his lips as his eyes shut sent my heart into a full-speed gallop. I already knew I loved this man. But at that moment, I realized my love for Sam was infinite.

The sound of faint wooing and cheering from outside the room cut into our intimate moment. Our eyes peered behind the glass wall. The spectators had now come closer to the room. They were all grinning and holding their hearts, rooting for us, with Joe wearing the happiest grin of all.

“Are you scared right now?” Sam asked deadpan.

I took his hand and set his palm on my chest. “Entirely.”
