“Definitely not jealous of your dating choices.”

“Not my strongest suit, no. Then I met Logan. This one, I didn’t really choose myself. Joe set me up with him.”

“I can imagine the insipidness of this one then.”

“Actually he was the best one. The only non-douchebag. He was a manager at Joe’s company. He was quite a decent partner to me. Always came up with the funniest jokes. We dated for a few months until he was offered a job in the city.”

“Why didn’t you move with him?”

“There wasn’t really any special love between us, so I let him go. And I had just started working at the great company of Mr Samuel Webb and loved the job enough to stay here.”

“You stayed here for me, huh.’ Sam’s hand squeezed on my waist teasingly. I didn’t notice that he was still holding me. I had reached this level of comfort around him that I didn’t seem to realize when we invaded each other’s personal space.

“Don’t let it get over your head, Mr Webb. It was my first managerial role. I was still very excited to finally have reached the top tier of my career. Who knew what job position I would have found in the short timeframe Logan had to move? I certainly couldn’t move without a job secured first.”

“I’m sure you wouldn’t have found any position that held you up on a pedestal like you are here with me.”

I chuckled with him. “No, I guess not. There’s only one Samuel Webb.”

“Seriously though, why didn’t you ever move to the city? You said it yourself. You’ve always had this big dream to be… big. Clearly you still want to continue climbing to the very top and here, you’re limited. Unless I decide to step down from my own company…”

“…here, working for you, there’s nowhere further up I can go.” I continued the last words he omitted from his sentence.

Working with Sam was enough. Until when, I had no idea. But for now…

My phone binged in my bag. I took it out, almost certain of who had texted me.

Thinking of you. Spending the day alone?

Joe remembered the anniversary. Of course, he would. It was the one day he made sure to spend with me every single year without fail.

I felt Sam unwinding his arm from around me. He must have seen the text from the eagle view of his height.

I texted Joe back quickly.

No. Thanks for the thought.

Short answer. I didn’t want to give him any more information or Joe might decide to come here. I certainly didn’t want that to complicate things more. Although I really appreciated him texting despite our rocky status.

Good to hear. Take care Luc.

I dropped my phone back into the bag. “Come on now. Let’s walk down.” I took off my boots and then made to reach for Sam’s hand.

Sam held his hand back. “Woah. It’s sandy there.”

“Duh. It’s the beach.”

“Don’t think I will like sand between my toes.”

“Oh, come on. It’s warm and it’s like magic, makes you carefree for a while.”

This time I managed to grab his arm and pull him behind me down the four steps to the beach. At the last step, Sam stopped.

“Wait, I need to take off my shoes.”

As soon as he removed his shoes and rolled up the leg of his jeans as far up his calf as he could, I entwined my arm in his and strolled away with him, stealing the warmth from his body to shield me from the cold breeze.

“This is surprisingly… nice.”
