“Oh, my sweet wolf, there is so much I still have to teach you.” She smirks with a twinkle in her eyes.

Trying not to think of all the thingsIcould teach her, I step back and take a picture, immediately forwarding it to Hale. Not two seconds pass before he starts blowing up my phone.

“Good. You’re up,” I snarl, turning my back on Zoey and that cocky smile of hers before they both get fucked.

“Who says I’ve been to bed yet?” Hale replies with amusement. “But my bedtime is beside the point right now. I’m more interested in knowing what the hell I’m looking at,” he adds, referring to the picture I just sent him. “Any reason why you sent me a pic of Alaric’s kid in hand-me-downs?”

“I need you to work your magic and make up a background for her that is bullet proof if anyone goes sniffing.”

The line goes silent for an excruciatingly long pause.

“You still with me?” I ask after I’ve had enough of his silent treatment.

“I’m still thinking,” he retorts, no longer sounding like his aloof self.

“Well, think faster. If you’re not up for the job, then I’ll find someone who is,” I warn, meaning it.

He chuckles. “Good luck finding anyone who is willing to go against Alaric and put his baby girl in danger. You know he’ll have your balls if he finds out what you plan to do, right?”

Alaric will have my balls one way or the other. There’s no changing that. Sooner or later, I’ll break and give Zoey what she wants, which means I’m a dead man no matter what I do next.

“Clock is ticking, Hale. Are you in or out?”

“I’m in, motherfucker. It’s your funeral, not mine.” He sounds nothing but gleeful about that.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Hale is one fucked-up, scary bastard since he usually acts normal, but occasionally he slips up and gives his true bloodthirsty nature away.

“We all have to go one day,” I reply, not caring if Hale would actually enjoy seeing Alaric and me duke it out. “Just have it done by the end of the day.” With that order, I hang up and turn to face the cause of my impending demise.

Either Alaric will kill me or her fucking smile will.

I’m fucked either way.

CHAPTER12

Gray

Hale comes through within an hour, driving over to my place, ready to get this show on the road, the cocky bastard, making it impossible for me to put this off any longer. Not that I want to. Not after a buyer came by the home late last night and set off my cameras.

Thankfully, I managed to sneak them in last week when I disguised myself as a repair man with the sole purpose of planting them. However, the group home’s electrical system is so old that I worry my little devices might croak at any given time, which means I have to work faster.

Not that seeing all the skinny, dirty, empty-eyed kids wasn’t incentive enough to get the job done ASAP. Seeing all those blank expressions made me so angry, I wanted to go on a killing spree right there and then. I look just like they do, and I remember perfectly well what happened to cause the emptiness in my gaze—the exact same horrid things that are most likely happening to them on a daily basis.

I cup Zoey’s face, uncaring that Hale is lounging in a car that is definitely not his since it’s a beat-up old Honda, and force her eyes to mine. “Listen to me, and listen to me good, little doe,” I warn, and for once, she doesn’t give me any lip. Good. I need her to listen, to understand. There’s this anxiety, this fear in me that is so strong, I actually have to swallow it back to stop myself from throwing her over my shoulder and locking her in my house where no darkness will ever touch her again.

But it already has, and I can’t protect her from that anymore.

“Keep quiet and keep your head down. Don’t draw attention to yourself, and if you become worried at any point, you get the fuck out of there or signal a camera, which I managed to put in every room.”

“Even the bathroom? You sick boy,” she teases, but I snarl at the reminder of the one place in the world that was my happy place.

It’s clear she doesn’t remember. Will going there jog her memory? I hope not, but even if it does, it’s too late to back out now.

“I mean it, Zoey, please.” It’s the growled plea that makes her sigh and lean into my touch.

“It’s going to be okay, Gray. I can handle myself. Besides, I’ve never felt unsafe when you are around. You have my back, and I have yours.” She kisses me.

It starts off slow, but I yank her hacked off hair back and take over, kissing her hard and fast, swallowing her moans.
