Gray… It was him always watching over me.

I know it in my very soul.

“See you soon, little doe,” he promises, and then he’s gone, leaving me staring after him.

My heart is in tatters, but one thing is certain—Gray has always been a part of my life.

Maybe the guardian angel wasn’t just Alaric after all…

Maybe it was the boy with the stormy eyes too.

CHAPTER18

Zoey

“Ineed you to do something for me,” Gray murmurs through my earpiece, his low voice sending a delicious shiver down my spine.

“Anything,” I reply, sounding a little too breathless for my liking.

This man has fucked me up good with his secrets, lies, and dirty, seductive games in the bedroom. Even the color of his eyes is my undoing.

And last night, I let him brand me, and I branded him.

I’m so fucked.

“What do I have to do?” I add a little more sternly, hoping he didn’t catch my slip up.

“I need you to get back into that office,” he replies a moment later, his voice softer than before.

My forehead crinkles at his request. “You need me to steal more files for you?”

“No,” he answers evenly. “I need you to find me something else. A place like this needs to keep its clientele anonymous, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know exactly who pays the large fee for their nightly visits. It won’t be on the computer since it’s too easy for someone to hack into. It’ll be somewhere else. Somewhere no one will think to look.”

I snort, feeling amused since Gray probably had Hale try to hack his way into every computer inside this house first before he ever let me step one foot in the door.

“There must be some file or notebook hidden away with that information, and I need you to find it for me,” he finishes.

“Why didn’t you say anything when I went in there the first time?” I chastise.

“I would have if you hadn’t taken out the earpiece I gave you.”

My teasing smile drops from my face at the fuck up I unknowingly made. “Oops.” I wince.

“Yeah. Oops.”

“Don’t get angry at me now,” I joke. “I’m sure I paid in full for my mistake last night.”

The low growl that sings through my earpiece makes me a total hot mess. The man could just say my name now, and I’d probably come from his voice alone.

This shit is so unfair.

I’m starting to really catch feelings, while he refuses to truly trust me.

I know he’s lying to me. Lying about his time in this house. Lying about how we met here when I was just a kid. Lying that he’s known me all along and has probably kept tabs on me throughout my life.

I would bet my bottom dollar that’s exactly what Gray has done. He and my dad might not be BFFs at the moment, but they sure have the same obsessive stalker vibe down to a T. They are more similar than they realize, that’s for goddamn sure. Maybe it’s true what they say after all—all girls end up falling in love with a version of their father.

Fuck my life.
