Then again, all I have are these hazy memories that come to me every now and then that raise my suspicions that Gray isn’t giving me the whole story. If I want answers, real answers, there is only one person who can give them to me, and that’s my sister. Even though Layla was in the group home with me at the time, she had spent most of it on the phone negotiating with Aunt Lucy to take us in and the rest sleeping off her pain medication. I’m sure she’ll remember the name of the group home. If not, then she’ll at least know where I could find our social worker who was in charge of our case. She’ll have it on our records for sure, and then I’ll be able to know for a fact that I was placed in Mercy Village Group Home. Then, and only then, will I be able to confront Gray. I’d like to see him wiggle out of that clusterfuck of a conversation.

“It looks safe now. Go,” he orders, completely bypassing my last remark.

“All work and no play makes for a dull life, Gray. Didn’t anyone tell you that before?”

“No more games, Zoey. Go now,” he instructs more forcefully.

“You’re no fun.” I pretend to pout, just so he doesn’t read what is actually running rampant in my mind.

I’m about to head to the office again when I suddenly hear my name being called out from behind me. I turn around and find Maeve walking toward me, all smiles as per usual. I flash her a grin of my own. It isn’t as bright as the one she’s sporting, but it’s a smile, nonetheless.

“Just the girl I wanted to see. Come help me, will you?” she asks, waving her hand for me to follow her out the door.

“Where are we going?” I ask, surprised that she’s taking me outside the house.

“I have to go on a few errands, and I thought you might like to tag along.”

“Lose her,” Gray orders in my ear.

“What type of errand?” I retort instead of doing as Gray commanded.

If we are going to have any real relationship in the future, he’s got to let me do my own thing and not boss me around twenty-four seven. I already have a dad. I don’t need another one.

“Only one way to find out.” Maeve giggles, juggling her car keys in my face.

I laugh at her carefree nature and walk beside her, crossing the street to her parked car.

“These your wheels? Nice.” I whistle at the shiny black Escalade. “Let me guess, it was another gift from that ex of yours.”

“I wish.” She laughs. “Nope. Just a loner from a friend.”

“Really? Must be nice having rich friends.” I snort, ignoring Gray’s angry growl in my ear.

“Can’t complain either way. Now, are you coming in or what?” she asks, tapping the roof of the car before sliding into the front seat.

With my hand on the car door handle, I turn to the end of the street and see a parked van blinking its headlights at me.

“Don’t do it. Make an excuse and get back in the house. Now!” Gray orders, his voice deadly.

“What did I just say about all work and no play, my wolf?” I tease, sticking out my tongue before entering the car.

On reflex, I cover my ear with my hand when the loud sound of Gray throwing his mic down to the ground threatens to burst my eardrum. As Maeve starts driving down the street, I quickly glance at the rearview mirror and verify that we’re being tailed by Gray’s van.

“What’s so funny?” Maeve asks when she hears me giggling.

“Oh nothing. I’m just glad to be out of that house. That’s all.”

“Still having a hard time settling in, huh?” she questions sadly.

“You can say something like that.” I huff.

“I figured. The first week is pretty rough for the new kids. But don’t worry, you’ll feel right at home in no time,” she explains, sounding hopeful.

Yeah, right.

Little does she know that her colleagues, and probably her boss too, are letting sick fucks abuse those defenseless kids while she isn’t looking. It’s fucking sickening. The way that guard prepared me last night for my supposed buyer is still making my flesh crawl. He took pleasure in humiliating me, tying me up, and leaving me completely helpless against my would-be attacker. Not only did he enjoy knowing that I was going to be taken against my will, but I’ll never forget how his eyes gleamed with lust and he basically drooled with envy that he wasn’t the one to do it. I pretend to cough into my fist just so I don’t heave all over Maeve’s friend’s nice car.

“Hey? You okay over there?” she asks in concern, patting my knee comfortingly. “You’re not getting sick on me, are you?”
