Licking my lips, I tug the thick metal chain out, letting the wolf’s head necklace dangle from my grasp before I tug it over my head, feeling it settle against my chest, my heart, where she belongs.

Gripping her neck, I tug her close. “I love it. I love you.”

“Good, now let’s kick some ass.” With that, she slips from the car, forcing me to follow after her.

No more hesitation, no more second-guessing.

It’s time to end this.

We crouch low as we run toward the estate. The road ends at the giant black iron gates with a golden M decorating the middle. There’s a guard post before it that’s empty, since we waited until they started to switch shifts to attack.

It’s clear this woman is rich, and knowing the sprawling white mansion beyond is bought with pain and blood makes me want to blow it all up.

When we reach the gate, we crouch there as I check my watch, counting down, and right on schedule, the explosion on the circuit box goes off. The ground shakes underfoot as the gate buzzes, indicating it’s dead. Grinning at Zoey, I kick it open, and she hurries in after me. I peek in the guard box to see the cameras are out as shouts go up inside.

The circular driveway is empty, and we slink along the garage to the right, filled with every car imaginable, keeping our backs to the wall of the mansion before ducking under big bay windows. Finally, we reach the huge double doors, and then we kick them open together.

I toss in a flash and tug her back, waiting until it goes off to sweep back in, firing as I go. I take down four, and Zoey takes down two as we move through their masses on the perfectly polished wooden floor of the entryway. I worried my little doe would hesitate, but I should have known better. She holds her gun like a professional, her eyes sharp and ready as she listens to my commands and watches my back.

A huge staircase leads upstairs, with hallways branching off down here.

We should clear it, but I need this to end.

I want this over quickly so no one gets away, so I tug out a grenade and toss it down the corridors where I hear guards gathering like mice. I press Zoey to the wall, and she jerks when it goes off, but there’s no more noise after.

I point upstairs, and she nods, pressing her back to mine as I start up them, her gun aimed behind us.

At the top of the stairs, there is a long corridor going both ways. I chose one at random, and after clearing bedrooms, a gym, a cinema room, and a steam room, we turn back to pass the stairs again just as something fires from below. Throwing Zoey to the floor, I take aim over the balcony and fire, spraying the entire entryway, ignoring the sharp pain where a bullet must have grazed my leg. There’s a scream, and I watch as two guards go down, their guns held at their sides, but I spot another trying to sneak up the stairs and turn my gun, quickly hitting him before reloading. I’m just changing the clip when a creak makes my head jerk up. There’s a guard trying to sneak toward me down the corridor, and I’m a sitting duck.

“Oh no you fucking don’t. He’s mine,” Zoey snarls, and I watch in awe as she hits him right between the eyes.

I can’t help but groan. Standing, I yank her to me, kissing her hard and fast. “I don’t think there should be any more, baby, but watch my back.” I want to drop to my knees and worship her, and show her how much I love her, but we don’t have time.

Later, I remind myself. When this is over, I will show her just how much this means to me. How much she means to me.

I head down the corridor. As much as I want to rush, we have to sweep every room until we reach the only one with closed doors.

They have to be hiding there.

Pressing my back to the wall, I lean into Zoey. “Rip open the door for me, little doe, and I’ll go in shooting. I’ll disable them so we can get answers.”

She nods, her expression serious, and I couldn’t be prouder. When she counts down on one hand, I almost come in my pants at how hot and capable my love is.

Zoey rips the door open, and I surge in, sweeping the entire room.

It’s an office, I realize quickly, but what I see beyond the door has me freezing.

It’s a single woman. She doesn’t have a weapon, but her eyes are hard.

She was waiting for us. “You don’t have to shoot.”

“Why is that?” I demand, my gun still trained on her as Zoey slips in behind me.

I don’t like it; something feels off.

“Do you see me resisting? No, Gray, this was my trap you walked into, and now we need to talk.”

I feel Zoey moving closer behind me and hear her gasp, and my own spine stiffens when I hear my name on the woman’s lips.
