She knows me.

Fuck.

“I knew you would find me one day. I’ve been waiting.” Her eyes are locked on me, calm despite the threat we pose.

“I’ve been waiting for this too,” I snarl.

Her eyebrow arches. “Oh, that’s cute. You thought I meant you. No, I meant her.” She glances at Zoey then, pride shining in her gaze.

My head swivels, and my eyes lock on an unsurprised Zoey. “Zoey, you know her?”

The betrayal is thick on my tongue. How could she know the woman behind all this? The woman responsible for my torture and ruining hundreds of innocent lives?

“Maeve,” she whispers, her eyes on the woman. “She was there when I was a kid, and when I went back, she was kind to me. She was my counselor.”

“Sorry, that’s not me anymore.” Maeve grins at Zoey. “I truly was one once upon a time. I wanted to help, wanted to do something good in the world, but such selfless acts don’t pay the bills. I guess I just liked money more than being altruistic. I’ve found that it’s overrated anyway.”

Stepping before Zoey, I glare at the woman. “Where’s General?” I don’t care if she’s a woman, she’s as good as dead for her crimes, but I need answers first, and if this truly is a trap, we have limited time.

“To tell you that would be to sign my own death warrant, I’m afraid.” She grins, winking at Zoey. “Surely you understand.” She wanders across the office and perches on the edge of the desk, totally unafraid. “I’m glad to see you, Zoey.”

“Shut up,” I snarl and move closer, my gun pointed at her chest, but she completely ignores me.

“I’ve been waiting for this day for a very long time.”

“Why?” Zoey whispers behind me.

“Zoey, don’t talk to her!” I yell, not liking the determined glint in this woman’s eyes.

“For you, silly, so you could take your place at my side.”

CHAPTER29

Zoey

“What?” I jerk in shock, truly not sure what to say or do.

Maeve was kind, she cared, she brought the kids toys, so why would she do this? I can feel Gray’s anger. He’s almost shaking from fury, yet she ignores him and leans around him to see me.

Why?

Shock still courses through me. I can’t believe she would hurt kids like that. Kids who trusted her and looked up to her. She cared for them. I know she did. I trusted her. I even got in her car, for fuck’s sake! She seemed kind and like she wanted to change the world, just like she said, so what the fuck?

Is she that good of an actor, or was I simply blinded by what I wanted to believe, desperately needing some good to come from that place?

“I’ve been watching you ever since I first met you when you were a child. I saw a spark in you, the same one that is in me. You are a fighter, smart, and pragmatic with the will to win at any cost. You have to be the best, to live dangerously and feel adrenaline just like I do, but I never expected this. You are magnificent, Zoey, everything I knew you could be and more. So strong, sure, and dangerous. You are incredible, unburdened by the laws of our world and stupid morals.” She pushes away from the desk, her hands splayed wide. “Think of everything you could do. He’s bringing you down, Zoey. He’s keeping you locked in a cage when you need to be set free. There is so much potential in you. I see it, and I saw it even when you were a child. Break the shackles he’s got you in. Break them.”

“Shut up!” Gray snarls.

“You could be the next me. We could rule the world together, never answering to anyone while watching them bow to us, crawling to us for scraps of our power and money. You would never need to worry about your sister again or anyone you care for. You would be untouchable.” Her eyes are wide as I drop my gun to my side. “You could have everything you wish for, everything you have always wanted. Name it, and I’ll make it happen. You and me, Zoey, we are going to do big things, but first, you have to kill him and end this stupid rebellion. He should have died a very long time ago. There is a reason they call him Ghost, after all.”

Gray jerks as I step up to his side, his eyes on her.

“Kill him, that’s all I have to do?” I ask her.

“Kill him and join me. We will rule the world together.” She holds out her perfectly manicured hand, like she did to me so many years ago.

I glance at Gray, and his gun drops as he turns to me. “Zoey,” he whispers, “she’s using you.”
