I pulled back, and she looked up at me with bright eyes. The specks of gold sparkled as I slid my hand to her waist. This time, she let me caress her there.

“Jo, you’re so sexy. You’re perfect.”

“I bet you say that to all the girls before you fuck them.” She pressed her lips to my neck again.

Wait, sometimes that sounded seductive, but not this time. I lifted to hover above her, effectively pushing my dick against her, and we both groaned. I rolled to her side to avoid crushing her.

“No, Jo, I don’t.”

“What? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to ruin it. Forget what I said. Keep going.” She wrapped her arms around my shoulders and urged me closer.

“Hang on,” I said, keeping my voice soft.

She sighed, and her eyes suddenly glistened with unshed tears.

“Whoa, baby. What’s going on?” I asked.

“I’m sorry, Lucas. Let’s forget this.” She rolled to her side with her back to me and covered her face with both hands. This was getting out of control. She wanted me. I felt it in every way possible. The look in her eyes, the blush on her chest down to those rosy peaks, and her wet warmth waiting for me. This was about something else.

“Jo.” I reached out and rolled her to me, then gently lifted her hands away from her face. “What just happened?”

“Lucas, you don’t have to do this.” Tell that to my dick.

“Jo, if you want to stop, we can absolutely stop. But I want to make sure that if we do, it’s because you don’t want me and not for any other reason. Since that day in the mirror, my hands have itched to touch you. I want you more than I can say.”

“God, Lucas, that’s hard to believe.” She looked at the ceiling. “Yourbody is perfect. Your muscles, your skin, your eyes. Mine isn’t the same.”

I propped up on my elbow, leaving my other hand resting under the swell of her breasts. “Baby, I don’t want it to be the same.” I absently grazed the soft undersides. I had to touch her, and she was extraordinarily soft there.

“That’s not what I mean,” she said. “You’re the quintessential picture of maleness. Solid and heavy. The women you’re used to are probably tall and light with skinny hips like that Kennedy. I’m not that.”

Jo wasn’t some woman I was fucking. I wasn’t sure what she was, but I knew she wasn’t that. “Youare honestly the only woman I’ve noticed since that first day in the barn. And for your information, you are the quintessential woman. Soft to my hard. Warm and sweet. I like your body, what I’ve seen of it. A lot.” I pulled her back to my front and curled around her. I didn’t know how this worked, so I just dove in. “I think we should go on a date.”

“What?”

“Will you go out with me?”

She was quiet. Her hair curled across the pillow and tickled my nose.

I chuckled and shifted to see her face. “Is that a hard question?”

She shook her head. “No, it’s not a hard question. I want to be sure I understand.”

I pulled her tighter against me. “Jo, I like you. I like talking to you and cooking with you and touching you.” I caressed my hand over her stomach, and she froze. “But I don’t think we’re ready for sex yet.”

“I’m sorry I screwed this up. I’ve only had a few one-night stands.”

“Good. This isn’t a one-night stand. And you didn’t screw this up. I did. You don’t believe me when I say I want you and that you’re perfect. So, I need to do some convincing.”

She took a deep breath. Her lips formed an O shape as she exhaled. I loved her mouth.

“Let’s have dinner with candles and a waiter, go to the movies, make out like horny teenagers. I didn’t do much of that when Iwasa teenager.” I smiled, giving her the dimples. “Let’s make another deal since our deals always work out so well.”

“Lucas.” Her voice was shaky.

“When’s the cookbook launch?”

“The twenty-second.”
