“Lucas.” I nodded coolly.

“I saw you sitting all alone.” She leaned in closer, and I took in the fitted white shirt, the pressed wool slacks, and heels. Quite a chef’s outfit. Jo wouldnotapprove.

“I wanted to introduce myself. I’m the pastry chef here. How long have you been a fan of Reef’s?” She looked me over as if I were a fangirl, and she could get me backstage if I made it worth her while.

“I’m not. I’m a fan of Jo’s. I think you know her as Sam.”

She paused a moment. “Right. Sam. Yes, she’s a talented chef.”

“She is. I’m addicted to some of her dishes. Her almond cake is my favorite, though. I almost inhale it every time she makes it for me.” I preened.

Felicia leaned back. “I see. You’re her …?”

“We’re together.” I looked at Jo, smiling at a guest. I was her man.

Taking the hint, Felicia backed off. We chatted a few more minutes about food and what Jo was doing now, then she excused herself. Fine by me. I was sipping my soda water and watching my girl do her thing.

The light dimmed in the restaurant as the waning sunlight faded to gray outside. Only a few books remained, and a few folks lingered at the bar. They had shown several couples to tables in the back dining area to prepare for the evening opening.

Jo stood and walked toward me when the table was empty, her eyes locked on mine. It was an incredible sight, Jo walking toward me.

She leaned close to my ear, and I smelled her sweet vanilla. “My hand is aching a little. I may have to stroke your cock with only my tongue tonight.”

“Baby, I’m wearing suit pants, not jeans. You make my dick any harder, and I’m going to make a scene when I stand up.”

Her smile was sweet and not sweet, all at the same time. “Let’s get out of here,” she said. “I have another ache, and you are the man to soothe it. Let me say goodbye and grab my wrap.”

I swallowed the rest of my soda water like a shot of vodka. “I’ll head to the men’s room and try to will the blood back to my brain for the second time today.”

Her mouth was going to be my downfall. At first, she had been so hesitant, self-conscious even. But she was getting braver, asking for what she wanted. Jo was a force and a beauty, and this weekend was working out exactly as I planned.

I took the long way to the men’s room, stepping between tables, past the open kitchen to the back corner. The time and the walk helped a little.

A few minutes later, I headed back by the kitchen and heard that commanding voice from my cooking lessons and my dreams.

“Reef. We’ve worked these details out. There’s nothing to discuss. I’ll get my share of the book profits directly from the publisher, and you and the restaurant will get all the press. You and I aren’t doing any more promotions together.”

“What if I changed my mind? What if I want to do the promotions together?”

What was this guy trying to pull?

“That’s not the contract.” Jo’s voice was sharp. “What’s changed?”

“I miss you, and well, it hurts a little how quickly you replaced me with a rich suit.”

“Replaced? What are you talking about?” She lowered her voice. “We fucked twice. We were hardly a thing. You said it yourself. Those were your words.”

“That wasn’t all it was. You know that. The shop got busy fast. I needed a little time.”

“As soon as the cookbook was finished, you hired another chef to do my job.”

“No, that’s not what happened.”

“Reef, I was the pastry chef. You hired another one. We didn’t need two. It doesn’t take a genius. You said you needed her to bethe face. I guess mine wasn’t good enough.”

“Babe, I had no idea you could look this good. The stock room was dark, and you wouldn’t let me turn on the lights the second time, either. I want a redo, this time with the lights on. Your body is bangin’.”

“Don’t call me babe, and a redo is not happening.”
