“I’ll kill you, Ty. Don’t do it.”

“Oh, you’ll kill me now? Hopefully, only in the bedroom.”

“Ty!” I shriek as he walks closer to the water.

He makes like he’s going to drop me in, but he doesn’t. He places me down on the ground by the edge of the pool and grins, a devilish look on his face. “I wouldn’t do that to you, Goody.”

“But we will!” Madison and Mason singsong behind us, and the next thing I know, both of them push us into the pool, clothes and all.

They follow close behind, and then we’re all in the pool, having the time of our lives.

ChapterTwenty-One

Chloe

We finally make it to California five days later. Mason and Tyler switch off driving his car, and Madison and I switch off with mine. This is why we’re able to drive longer amounts of time without stopping. One night, we drove straight through until the morning, not wanting to hit city traffic during the day.

Tyler has yet to find a place, so he’s gonna crash with Mason and Asher until he finds one. They’ve already moved into their place at the beginning of July, and Madison already moved into ours before she flew out to Jersey. The landlord let her in a few days early to do so.

So we head straight there, arriving in California late afternoon on a Friday. The boys unload my car while Madison and I get to work ordering food and unpacking my stuff.

The apartment is just as gorgeous as Madison described, and it looks even better than when she showed it to me over FaceTime.

Mads had called me from the store, and we agreed on decorations for the shared spaces, like the living room, bathroom, and kitchen.

Then, after she finished setting it up, she called me again.

She hung fairy lights throughout the living room, gushing about how cute they were. A few throw pillows and a cashmere blanket finish the look, along with a crescent moon-shaped shelf on the wall.

I can’t wait to get started on my room. There’s a window seat with built-in shelves lining both sides. Madison gave me this room because she knew how much I loved the window seat.

Inside the living room, I twirl around, my arms flying out around me. “You did so well, Mads! It’s so nice in here!”

Mads claps her hands and wiggles on her tiptoes. “I know, right? This year is going to be the best!”

We both laugh and jump up and down together when the boys walk in, carrying more bags and boxes. “Are we missing the party?” Tyler says.

He places the boxes in his hand down and looks around, a low whistle coming from his throat. “Nice place, ladies.”

“My sister has good taste,” Mason agrees. “But wait till you see my place.”

“Your place is cool, Mase. But nothing beats ours.” Madison and I high-five, and the boys roll their eyes.

After the boys finish bringing everything in, the Chinese takeout arrives, and we dig in.

Mid crab rangoon, the doorbell rings, and Madison flies to her feet. “I’ll get it!” She says a bit too eagerly. That’s weird. Is she expecting someone?

She darts off to the door before anyone can ask questions.

“Any idea who’s here?” I ask, more to Mason than Tyler.

Mason shrugs. “No clue.”

Madison quickly returns, her cheeks now bright red, a forced smile on her face.

Asher follows her, and when he walks in, he gives a head nod but doesn’t say a word.

Mason stands up. “Hey, man. I didn’t know you were coming by.”
