“Yeah, neither did I,” Madison says as she sits down, a hint of irritation in her voice.

There’s definitely a weird vibe going on, and when I glance at Tyler, he gives me a look like he has no idea what the hell is going on.

“I was on my way home from work and passed by. I thought I’d see how the trip went.”

“Well, sit down, join us. There’s plenty of food to go around,” Mason says.

Asher sits next to Madison, and she hands him a plate along with the nearest container of takeout.

Mason breaks the tension by telling a funny story, and soon, we’re all laughing and joking, even Asher.

He’s a quiet one, almost dark and broody looking. But I know he’s really smart, Madison filling me in on his valedictorian status and his insanely high SAT scores.

He’s studying aerodynamics and is taking junior-level classes as a sophomore this year.

Seems like Madison knows a lot more about Asher than she likes to let on. I keep saying I need to do some digging, and now that we’re living together, I’m determined to find out some juicy details.

Tyler squeezes my knee under the table, and I smile lazily in his direction, the Chinese food making me full and sleepy.

He leans over and whispers in my ear, “I don’t want to sleep without you tonight.”

A warm buzz rushes through me.I don’t want to either.

“I’ll sneak you into my bed. Better than Mason’s couch,” I whisper back.

“True. You’ll open your window for me so I can climb in?”

“What are we, Romeo and Juliet now? But of course I will.”

We grin at each other, totally oblivious to those around us.

That is until Mason starts making catcalls.

“Get a room,” Madison teases, and I toss a fortune cookie at her.

“Okay, fine by me,” I say and stand, tugging on Tyler’s arm.

“You don’t have to ask me twice. See ya bitches later,” Ty says and then lifts me and carries me out the room as our friends groan and gag.

Tyler ends up in my bed more nights than on Mason’s couch. Can you blame him? Sexy times and a more comfortable night’s sleep? I’d choose my bed too.

A week later, he has a place lined up, a small studio apartment he found for cheap. “It’s got a kitchen, bathroom, and place for my bed, couch, and TV. That’s all I need. Besides you between my sheets.”

We both find jobs quickly too, which I’m grateful for. Stressing over money is the last thing I want. Besides, I don’t want Tyler to struggle and then want to head home. It scares me he might leave one day, no longer liking California. But he found a job at a garage, the need for mechanics never low, and he’s making decent pay too. A good word from his boss definitely helped.

And Tyler and I? We’re fantastic.

We fall into an easy routine once classes begin. I’m super busy with work and school, but Tyler doesn’t seem to mind, as he works long hours and hangs out a lot with Mason and his group of friends.

I didn’t think anything would get between us. But how silly am I?

Because life loves to throw curveballs.

And there was a big one headed our way.
