He laughed, “Neither do I. Thank goodness it’s not just me. A bunch of French guys took me here once, and they made a mockery of me.”

Relief washed over me as he signaled over to the lady. She came rushing back over to assist us.

“What can I get you?”

“We’ll have your house red and whatever the specialty of the day is.”

“Noah, I’ve offered to translate the menu to you over a hundred times.”

He gently grabbed the old lady’s hand, “There’s no need. You always manage to pick the perfect dishes for me. Why change perfection?”

This seemed to make the lady’s day as she took our menus away. I think even in the darkness, I could detect a hue of pink to her cheeks. It was nice to see how Noah treated his elders. It showed just how respectable he was.

“I hope you don’t mind me ordering for the both of us. It just makes it simpler. Was there anything you wanted in particular? I can change the order.”

“Actually, what you ordered works fine for me. My parents always encouraged me to try new foods. If I didn’t like it, then at least I could check it off my list.”

A darkness gathered in Noah’s eyes, “You were lucky to have such supportive parents growing up. In our house, we had to eat what was given or went to bed hungry. Our childhoods appear to be polar opposites.”

I wanted to pry further into his past, understand where that deep sadness so evident in his face stemmed from. Unfortunately, we were interrupted as the old lady poured our wine and presented our food. As soon as I took my first bite, I knew that I would be coming back to this secret cafe time and time again. It was like heaven in my mouth. After that, the wine and food flowed alongside the conversation and I couldn’t believe how quickly the hour flew by.

As we walked back across the park to his office, I couldn’t help but ask, “So, who was that woman from yesterday? The stunning brunette?”

Noah grabbed my hand, “Are you talking about your reflection?”

It was cheesy, but somehow it still made me blush. He seemed to enjoy having this effect on me, and I was relishing it.

“No, silly. The woman who was outside your office.”

“Veronica Price. Digitron’s financial advisor. She can be a bit hands-on, I know, but nothing to worry about.”

“She had her hands all over you. I think she has a thing for you.”

“I’m trying to keep my distance, but it’s rather difficult when I work so closely with her. It’s okay. As soon as this project is done, then she’ll be out of my hair. And she’s nothing compared to you, I swear.”

As though by a trick of destiny, we found Veronica waiting outside the office building as we emerged from the park. Noah gave my shoulder a squeeze before looking at me apologetically.

“I do actually have a meeting with her right now, but right afterward, expect a phone call. This weekend, I’m taking you on a real date.”

I grinned as he kissed my hand before crossing the street to where Veronica was waiting. Once again, she glared angrily at me. Somehow, she looked even more annoyed than the day before. I didn’t care, though.

This weekend I have a date with Noah Rover.

I was outside her apartment ten minutes early, waiting in the car.

“I’m downstairs, whenever you’re ready,” I said into the phone before hanging up.

It had taken me the rest of the week to get everything planned out for our date. I wanted everything to be perfect, and I took full advantage of my connections to ensure that was the case. I knew that I would owe quite a few favors to rather influential people in the future, but it was worth it for her.

As I saw her emerge from her building, I quickly stepped out to open the door for her. She giggled as she climbed into the back of the limousine.

“You got a limo for our date?” she looked about the interior incredulously.

I grinned, sliding onto the seat next to her, “You deserve only the best. Plus, I think we’ve had enough practice run dates. It’s time we had a real one.”
