“He found me.” That’s not a lie. He was searching for me. “Some vampire, some guy dressed as a vampire—” I don’t want Hannah thinking that I believe in vampires and fairies and all of that. For a few minutes, while we were alone, it had been easy to believe. But now…I’m not so sure. There must be another reason to explain what’s going on. “Was harassing me and Kov stepped in.”

Kov had done nothing but help and answer my questions.

Yeah, because he wants to kidnap me and take me to Fairy.

My brain glitches at the idea because if I believe he’s going to kidnap me then I have to believe in fairies. If I don’t believe in fairies, why am I running away from him?

I shiver, my body remembering his touch and the heat of his kiss. That kiss would have been enough to break any curse. As we walk past the jack-o-lanterns, the candles in their heads flare bright, making their grins come alive. All the decorations of graves and skeletons and ghosts swinging from the trees in the backyard are no longer fun and now feel sinister.

“Maybe we should go back in.” What if the vampire is out here and he’s waiting to bite me again? What will his venom do to me?

“I thought you wanted to get away from the barbarian guy?”

I thought I did, but now I’m confused. A cold breeze rattles the skeleton at the end of the veranda and curls up beneath my skirt, reminding me that I’m not wearing anything underneath. Reminding me of his gentle touch and the way he heard all of my concerns and didn’t laugh or judge. “I freaked out, that’s all.”

Hannah puts her hands on her hips and glares at me. “You freaked out?”

“I don’t usually hook up with guys I’ve just met. And it wasn’t like he was done and walking away after.” If he was human, he probably would’ve asked for my number. “I don’t know anything about him.”

“I have a wild idea. Maybe you could talk to him?”

I’ve done that, but I hadn’t gotten the answer that I wanted.

No, he’d told me the truth and I didn’t like the taste of it. Three men jump over the railing and land on the deck. I startle and gasp. One of them is the vampire who scratched my hand.

I don’t know if the others are vampires or just dressing up, and I don’t want to find out either.

“What do we have here? A witch and her cat?” The vampire smiles. “Lost your trow?”

I take a step backward, but they are faster. Closing the distance between us, he reaches for me, and I snatch my hand away. I have magic, so I should be able to use it. Kov had said it was based on the air. With that thought in mind I call the breeze that’s rattling the leaves and use it to shove the vampire down the stairs.

He tumbles and sprawls in a mess at the bottom.

His friends stare at me. I stare at my hands. Did I really do that? My hands begin to shake. The other two vampires move closer. I grab Hannah’s hand and we turn to run back inside, but I collide with the solid bulk of Kov. I tip my chin to look up at him as relief floods through me.

“Take your friend inside,” he says.

“What are you going to do?” I glance over my shoulder. The vampire has gotten up and is stalking up the stairs, his fangs gleaming in the moonlight.

“Stop him.” Kov tilts his head at the vampire.

“What do you mean, stop him?” Hannah jabs Kov in the chest as though he is some guy in costume and the ax is fake.

“He’ll ask him to stop harassing me,” I say. Though I suspect there will be less asking and more swinging of the ax.

Kov turns and I drag Hannah inside.

“I think you’re right; there is something freaky about him,” Hannah says.

“There’s something freaky about that vampire. He’s been all over my ass all night.” An ass that is feeling very bare beneath my skirt. I shut the glass door, but then I want to open it and go back out to help Kov.

No, he told me to go inside.

I shouldn’t have kneed him in the balls and run off. If I’d stayed with him, the vampire wouldn’t have gotten me…yeah, because Kov would’ve taken me to Fairy which is so much better. I don’t know if I should be excited or terrified at the idea.

Then I remember I used magic to push a vampire down some stairs. Have I caused an earthquake, or a flood, or some other disaster?

Guilt wraps around me. I shouldn’t have used magic at all. Kov had warned it doesn’t belong here and that it’s dangerous. I should’ve listened to him, even though that means going to Fairy.
