Diesel turned them in a circle and began to dance, holding Em close.
“You really don’t want to be higher ranked?”
“Not even a little bit. I feel like the number one lion with you, and that’s all I ever wanted.”
“You’re definitely my favorite lion.”
He smiled, his whole being warmed from the inside out by her sweet words. He kissed her and then dropped to one knee, marveling internally at how little his leg ached. That salve was a miracle.
After pulling the box from his pocket, he opened it and held it toward Em, who was staring at him with her mouth open and her eyes wide.
“I had this whole thing planned earlier for the DJ to play your favorite song while I asked you to marry me. But that got interrupted, and even though this didn’t go like I thought it would, the fact is that I want tonight to be the night that I ask you a really important question. I love you, Emberly. You’re the other half of my heart, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”
“Yes!”
He took the ring out of the box and put it on her finger, then rose to his feet and kissed her. He could taste the salt of her tears, and his own eyes stung.
“I love you,” she murmured against his lips.
“I love you, too, sweetheart. I’m going to spend the rest of my life making sure you’re the happiest female on the planet.”
She smiled and tears tracked down her cheeks. “You’re off to a really good start.”
