Don’t smash my heart to pieces, I want to say but I don’t dare. Not when he won’t look at me.

“Listen,” he says in that same dead voice. “I’m going to tell you a few things while I can.”

I shake my head. “What do you mean?”

“That’s what he’s been doing,” Ashton whispers, “locked up in here. The wards weren’t against us.”

“They were against Ophelia,” I breathe, horror dawning. “And we broke them.”

“They wouldn’t have held her back for long,” Sindri says quietly.

“If she needs to touch you in order to trap you,” Ashton says, “we’ll escape through the window. We’ll—”

“Stop talking nonsense,” Sindri says. “I’m already caught. The only reason I can think for myself right now is because you’re here. It lessens her power.”

“Sin—”

“Fucking listen!” He draws a shaky breath. “The elders slipped up in the days and nights during which they worked me over. Gave me some information I bet they hadn’t intended to give.”

Ashton’s throat works as he swallows hard. “Such as?”

“Such as, I was right in my suspicions. My mother was a princess. I am a pureblood after all. Her elemental magic was strong and that was why she was considered dangerous. That was why they didn’t protect her. That was why they have left her to die.”

My heart is breaking for him. “Oh, Sin…”

“They also talked about the Queen Witch,” he goes on. “Every thousand years, a Light and a Dark Queen are born.”

“Two of them?” I whisper.

“One of them is stronger and will win over the other,” Sindri says. “Only one ritual can achieve full integration of the elements—”

“Stop speaking like a… like a fucking robot,” Ashton growls. “Snap out of it.”

Sindri shrugs one shoulder, staring at the far wall. “Just passing on information.”

“What information, then?” Ashton looks like he’s about to grab Sindri and shake him, but like me, he doesn’t move to do it. “What the hell is so important?”

“For a full connection to happen,” Sindri says, “you must connect with all four conduits. At the same time.”

“But how?” I whisper.

A muscle in his jaw twitches. “Better find out. Ophelia will if you don’t.”

“Is this how we break her enchantment?” Ashton asks.

Sindri’s voice grows colder. “You can’t break her enchantment, vampire. All you can do is become more powerful. Draw the conduits to yourself.”

My hands are shaking. I clasp them together. “But how?”

“I don’t know that,” he says. “Mia…”

“Yes?”

For the first time since we entered, he really looks at me, his eyes like pits of sadness. Then he staggers to the armchair and sinks in it, hunching over. “It’s done. Listen. The question you asked…”

“No, I don’t want to hear it.” I shake my head.

“It’s a yes, Mia.”
