The others aren’t here. Can I help him control it when he doesn’t seem to even know where he is—or when?

He growls deep in his throat. His wolf ears twitch. The muscles in his chest, under his torn T-shirt, shift.

“Jax! Come on, listen to my voice. Follow it.” I run my free hand over his chest, under the T-shirt, over all those delicious muscles, until it’s over his heart. It’s pounding fast. “You’re not a child anymore. You’re strong, and you’re not alone.”

“They’re… killing me,” he hisses between his teeth. “Every day…”

“Oh God…” Tears spill from my eyes. “You’re safe now. Let me help you.”

Those wolf eyes turn on me and something sparks in them. He sits up, gathers my hair up, cups the back of my head, and crushes our mouths together.

From zero to a hundred, this boy… I fall into the kiss, turned salty by my tears, his canines pricking my lips, and I don’t care. I cup his face, taste him, so relieved to be back in his arms…

… and then he breaks the kiss and jerks back. “Fuck.”

“Jax…” I stroke his face, sniffling. “I’ll help you. What’s wrong?”

“I can’t.”

“Why not?” I let my hand drop. “Is it because of Ophelia?”

“Aurora,” he breathes. “Her name is Aurora.”

“Right.” I sit back, slowly pull my hand free of his, struggle to gather my thoughts, my feelings, steady my heart. The wolf ears still poke through his hair and he’s so cute it breaks my heart. “The girl that Zoey bullied, right? Your girlfriend. You must be so relieved to have her back. You’re in love with her, aren’t you?”

“I… don’t…” He frowns.

“You don’t what?”

“I don’t know,” he whispers.

“You don’t know if you’re in love with my cousin?”

“I… am. Of course I am.” He’s rubbing at his face with both hands. “She’s my girlfriend. She’s back.”

The vise around my chest tightens. I get up from his bed. “Then I wish you happiness with her.” It’s so hard to get the words out. “At least, you seem to have your magic back under control.”

His canines have retracted, too. Only his eyes are still amber and bright. “Mia, wait…”

I lick blood off my lips. A bloody kiss. So fitting. “I have waited. Waited for you to talk to me. But it took you getting hurt to admit to your feelings for her. I thought you went to her because she is the Queen Witch that can save you.”

“She is. Ithinkshe is. Dammit.” Why does he have to look so adorably confused? So tired and sad and disoriented that all I want is to hug him, tell him it will be okay.

He wants my cousin, not me.

It shouldn’t matter. It’s not important. He should do what makes him happy.

Why doesn’t he look happy?

“Mia—” he starts.

The door swings open and a familiar girl stands there, hands on hips. “What are you doing?” she snaps.

“Ophelia,” I whisper, too sad to react. “What do you want?”

“What do you think? To see my boyfriend.” She winks. “Hi, Jason. Come on, kick the slut out. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you warm till morning.”

I stumble to the girls’ dormitories, exhausted beyond reason. My body hurts with scrapes and bruises from when Emrys threw me down on the street to protect me. My head aches. Emotionally, I’m a wreck. My eyes itch from the tears I’ve shed, my lips are chuffed, and no, I don’t want to think about the fact I kissed Jason, about the relief of being close to him again only to have it ripped from me, to hear that he’s in love with Ophelia.
