“What look?”

“Come on, Ash. I think I know you enough by now to tell when you feel guilty.”

He stiffens. “I don’t.”

“Really. It seems to me that you feel guilty for just about everything in your life.”

He hisses between his teeth. “I have to get to my next class.”

“Evasion, Ash. Another thing you’re good at.”

“And suddenly you’ve acquired a degree in therapy? I don’t feel any guilt.”

“Well, Ophelia says you do. She told me so last night.”

He frowns. “You met her last night?”

“Yes, because I sensed that Emrys was in pain, so Sindri and I went and got him from her clutches. Ash, what does she know about you that I don’t? I mean apart from the obvious, your history with Jason and Sindri, which isn’t all that obvious for most people but I guess I’d feel guilty in your place, too—”

“Fuck.” He sidesteps me and makes his way to the door. “Can’t do this now.”

“Then when?” I turn around to follow him. “When will all of you trust me enough to tell me what drives you, what makes you tick, why Ophelia chose you?”

He stops, his shoulders stiffening more, and turns his head to stare at me. “What else did she tell you?”

“About you? That was all. I swear.”

“Good. Stay away from her.” Red has started to bleed into his irises. “My past, my guilt… it has nothing to do with anything, all right?”

“If you say so,” I whisper, following him with my gaze as he storms out of the classroom. Why am I not convinced? So I follow him. “Ash, wait.”

“Go away,” he snaps as I run to catch up with him. “Can’t talk now.”

“We can’t keep putting off this discussion.”

“Which one? About my guilt? About Ophelia? About Sindri?”

“What happened last night?” I manage to get in his way. “Whoa, slow down. Did you find Jason? Is he okay?”

“Jason, huh?” He tries to walk past me but I dance back in his way. “What do you want, Mia?”

“The truth. You’re not telling me all of it.”

“And who is? Are you?”

I lift my hands. “Yes! Yes, I am.”

“Well, good for you. Maybe you don’t have any skeletons in your closet.”

“And Jason?”

“Is Jason the one you want?” Suddenly Ashton is in my face and pushing me backward, one step, another, until my back hits a wall. “Tell me.”

His eyes are almost red now, his fangs longer. “What’s this about?” I whisper. “Are you… are you jealous?”

“I don’t know. Would you be if I told you I slept with him last night?”

“Slept together as in—?”
