“Focus on me,” Ashton says, then he grabs my chin and turns my face to him. A different jolt goes through me, the manhandling going straight to my dick. “Eyes on me.”

“Stop fucking around, Ash, I—”

I’ll fuck you right back, I was going to say but his mouth crushes on mine, stealing the words and my breath and any air left in my body. It’s everything I imagined, the roughness of his stubble and the strength in his hand, the other pushing, pinning me to the wall, his crotch pressing into me, an answering hard-on rubbing against mine.

Fucking good.

Warmth flows through me, but it’s not from Ashton’s touch. It’s a touch on my magic—the aura around me that pulses in time to my heart—and it’s soothing and light like a kiss.

Then a book flies off her desk, crashing to the floor, and we jerk. The window flies open. The touch on my magic becomes more solid—a slight push, a slight tug.

Shoving at Ashton’s chest, panting, I turn to her. “It’s you.”

Her eyes are wide. “I’m…”

“What are you doing?” Almost instantly, the yank on my magic—on my chain—is back, making me hiss. Guess I got Ophelia’s attention again just by looking at Mia. “Goddamn.”

“I don’t know,” she whispers, waving at the book and window, “I just… wanted to touch you and… and this happened.”

“Magic,” Ashton says. “It’s magic. Have you done anything like this before?”

She starts to shake her head, then stops. “I… did something,” she whispers. “Just earlier.”

“What?”

“Something like this. Magic.”

The pull on my power is growing stronger. Controlling the surge is starting to take up my attention as my back aches and my joints burn, as my jaw hurts like a motherfucker, starting to change shape.

Still, I can’t look away from her, shocked to my core by this turn of events. “I thought you said you’re not an Apollinari, that it was all a lie. Ophelia… She says that you have no magic.”

“Then she lied to you, too,” Mia says and sounds sad.

“The fuck. No, it can’t be. She would never do that. She wants what is best for us.” The yank lessens a little, and I find myself rubbing at my brow. “My loyalty is with her.”

“Fucking hell. Looks like my idea didn’t work,” Ashton grinds out.

“When you slept with Jason,” Mia says softly, “did you feel that click of magic, same as when you, me, and Sindri lay together?”

“You three slept together?” I stare at them, and I won’t deny that my mouth goes fucking dry as the image forms in my mind. “Hot damn.”

“No,” Ashton says to her, ignoring me. “Maybe a little, but nothing as strong. So… you have to be part of it for the magic to slide into place, I guess.”

“Afraid so.” Even her smile is sad.

But my loyalty is with Ophelia, Ophelia, Ophelia…

He shakes his head. “Girl, having you with us is all I want, but that’s how Ophelia tracks us and stops us. It’s a bind. And by that, I mean a motherfucking vicious mess with no way out.”

“If Sindri stays on our side,” she says, “then maybe we stand a chance, but if not…”

“What happened to Sindri?” I ask, pushing off the wall, any thought of kissing Ashton shutting down.

“Ophelia didn’t tell you?” he says.

“Tell me what?”

“How she zipped out of the Academy and rescued our fae friend while we were trying to get enough vampires to spill blood and open a portal.”
