But something made me glance over my shoulder, finding the two guards as they headed toward the building. Fear raced across my skin, sending a shiver along my spine.

“We’re going to be late,” Freddy urged, glancing my way.

As though the brother knew what I was thinking.

They weren’t me…

They weren’t Freddy…

They weren’t Logan.

The sooner this meeting was over, the better. All of a sudden, the seat at the Commission’s table wasn’t as inviting as Kat was. “Let's just get this over with,” I grumbled.

Logan glanced my way as we stepped up to the electric doors. “Thirty minutes,” he murmured. “Thirty minutes and I’ll have you back to her.”

I nodded.

Thirty minutes and she was mine…again.

I rolled and pushed myself up on the edge of the bed, grabbing Lazarus’s sweats and t-shirt from the floor as I went. They were crumbled, smelled of my own desire, and not my clothes. I glanced toward the bathroom and contemplated a second shower, then decided against it.

My body ached, but it was a good ache. The kind of throb that made me smile as I headed for the bathroom. But staying here full-time wasn’t an option…not unless I had my things. So, I used the toilet, wiped and flushed, then pulled on Laz’s clothes once more, sliding my arms through the sleeves of his leather jacket, and slipped my flats on.

By the time I stepped into the elevator, I was grinning.

Laz wasn’t going to buckle…and he wasn’t going to run.

For the first time in forever, I felt hope dance inside me.

I lowered my hand, remembering Freddy’s words. He wasn’t going to tell Laz, not until I did, at least…and that was happening tonight. Tonight. I splayed my hand wide against my belly, feeling that flutter. Aquickening,Freddy had called it.

“A quickening,” I murmured as the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened.

Two guards were waiting for me, dressed in gray suits.

They turned as I stepped out, their hard gazes fixed on me.

“I need to go to my apartment,” I stated. “I’ll be a while.”

One of them stepped toward me. “No, we wait here.”

I flinched at the bite in his tone and felt the cold, arrogant side of my nature push to the surface. It was a nasty side of me, destructive and detrimental, and much needed when I dealt with vultures, both at home and in the media. And it was a side of my personality that rose to the surface now as I took a step forward. “I don’t remember that being a question. Iamgoing to my apartment. You can either escort me or I can call the Commander.”

I pulled my phone free and pressed against the cracked screen, punching his name from my contacts.

The asshole guard just looked at his buddy. I didn’t care about their disapproval. I didn’t give a fuck one way or the other. No one was going to ruin this day for me. Not two pissy bodyguards or Freddy’s careful looks. I was getting my clothes from the apartment and making sure everything was perfect when I told Laz what I had to tell him.

“Fine,” the asshole guard muttered.

I fought the twitch of a smile. “Fine,” I repeated, and strode toward the doors.

CCTV cameras blinked above me as I made my way out of Laz’s building and turned right. But the guard’s attitude was wearing at me. Being silent, broody, and dangerous was one thing. But being fucking rude to those he was paid to protect was another.

Heavy footsteps resounded behind me,right behind me.“You’re too close,” I snapped. “Back off.”
