He broke our stare, then turned. The guards moved around him in a swarm as he left the main building behind. Anna glanced behind her to the thick towering palms that covered the sunny side of the buildings.

“What is it?” I asked, following her gaze.

“Nothing,” she murmured. “Just thought I felt something.”

A chill swept down my spine. I followed her gaze, checking the shadows, and walked faster. I wouldn’t put it past Damon to stalk me…I wouldn’t put anything past him, actually.

I could get away from him. First, he turned up at Xael and Evan’s apartment, then he hosted the damn party for Baldeon. I would not let him control me, not let him force me to hide and tremble with fear. He wouldnotforce me into hiding…no fucking way.

The initiation. That’s what this was…it had to be.

I watched Finley Salvatore from the corner of the building. The smug bastard thought he was hidden…but not from me. I smiled and crossed my arms as the asshole rubbed the back of his neck and turned away. Word was the initiation was in play. A pissy, juvenile contest for those who liked to play bad boy.

But it wasn’t for me…because I didn’t play.

I pushed off from the wall, to find Freddy behind me.

“You finished stalking?” he grumbled, looking past me to the building where Kat and Anna had disappeared.

“Stalking the stalker, it looks like,” I said, motioning behind me.

Freddy pushed off the wall and peeked out, finding Finley hidden in the shadows of the towering green trees. “Huh,” was all he said, then he glanced toward the building. “Anna someone, you said her name was, right?”

“Shaw,” I answered. “Anna Shaw.”

The image of Finley standing over her that first night on the island came back to me in a rush. Whoever the careful little brunette was, she had Finley Salvatore in knots. I licked my lips and smiled. There was nothing I liked more than to see a Salvatore come undone.

But the smirk died on my face the moment I realized I was in the exact same fucking position. Freddy watched the realization dawn on me, and grinned. “Just caught on, huh?”

“Shut the fuck up, Freddy,” I grumbled, and pushed past him.

It wasn’t the same, not anywherenearthe same.

My phone made abeep.I looked down and saw a message from Dad.

Looks like I’ll be flying in for a Commission meeting.

My gut clenched as reality crashed in. I pressed the button, killing the screen, and slipped my phone back into my pocket. Baldeon’s death would cause a big ripple through the families. They’d be worried…no, more than that…they’d be downright terrified.

I strode back to my own building and Freddy and I took the elevator all the way up to the apartment. Logan looked up at us from the kitchen. The counter was a damn mess of food and drinks and guns.

“How was the patrol?” I asked as I came closer.

The shake of his head told me all I needed to know. Whoever I'd seen last night running from Baldeon’s building was long gone. Logan was a former SEAL, and one of the first to put his hand up for the recon mission to find those responsible.

But the fact they'd found nothing meant that whoever took the hit was more than just good…they were exceptional.

“Your dad text you?” Logan asked, handing me a beer.

“Yeah, looks like the party is about to be crashed.”

The dangerous looking bastard just shook his head. “Don’t worry. He’s not staying.”

“Yeah?” I popped the can and took a gulp, but I was watching him, taking in the way he avoided my gaze. “Spill…”
