“Ew!” Connor called out. “Do you have to do that?”

“I’m afraid so.” Gavin grinned. “I really, really like her, you see.”

But Connor had already forgotten about the kiss. He opened the fridge. “My sandwich?”

Gavin chuckled, turning to watch Brooke walk away. How priorities changed as one grew older. Food was the last thing on his mind at the moment.

CHAPTER 6

––––––––

Brooke glanced warilyat Gavin. He was putting the box he’d just closed next to the others in the hallway. After dinner, he’d helped her put Connor in bed and had then insisted on helping with packing up everything in the living and dining room.

The sexual tension in the room had been rising steadily over the last few hours. She put her hands on her back and stretched, trying to loosen up her sore muscles. “I think we’re done here. Thank you so much for your help and especially for the lovely dinner. You’re spoiling us.”

Gavin grinned. “You’re easy to spoil. What about the kitchen? Have you—?”

She shook her head adamantly. He had to leave and quickly, “Thank you, I’ll manage. But thanks for helping out today.”

He picked up his car keys. “It’s easier when we lean on each other.”

“I’m fine—you’ve done your share today, thanks.”

H shrugged and moved toward to leave. “Okay, I’ll pick up Connor on Saturday.”

Brooke swallowed and opened the front door. He was just going to leave? Of course, he was leaving; that was what she wanted. Wasn’t it?

His eyes were dark blue pools filled with messages she was too scared to decipher. “Goodnight, Brooke.”

She focused on her hand . “Goodnight, Gavin.”

He walked out, and she quickly closed the door. Her heart hammering away, she leaned against the door, listening for his footsteps. But she couldn’t hear anything. Slowly, she opened the door again. He was still standing on the porch.

For long moments, they stared at each other.

“I want you. You have no idea how badly.” His voice was barely a whisper.
