“We can’t. But maybe just a ki—”

She was in his arms, his mouth devouring hers before she’d finished speaking. He swung her inside the house, kicked the door shut without taking his mouth from hers.

His hands roamed restlessly over her back, kneading and caressing until her whole body was on fire. His scent surrounded her, sending her senses into overdrive. She leaned into the kiss, reveling in the feel of his stubble against her cheek, the warmth of his body under her fingers, his ragged breathing.

One of those clever hands closed around her breast. She nearly came undone right there and then. What he could do with those hands. Clinging to him, she tried to stay upright.

He lifted his head, gulping in air. “Damn, Brooke, you’re killing me.” He opened his mouth, closed it again, and when she blinked, he was gone, the front door closing behind him again.

She couldn’t move. Her legs were too weak. With a laugh and a sob, she slid down to the floor and dropped her head on her knees. Oh. My.

Kissing and making love to her husband Adam had been a slow, relaxing, enjoyable experience. Kissing Gavin, though, was something entirely else. Looking down at her bare feet, she laughed on a sob. Her toes were happily curled inward.

He literally lit a fire inside her when their mouths met. Red-hot passion, the likes of which she’d never experienced before, threatened to devour her every time she was in his arms. Look at her—she was hot all over, her body shivering in anticipation, her breasts aching for his touch, her toes curling, for goodness’ sake.

She hadn’t known anyone could want another human being this much. She hadn’t known passion could burn so brightly, so feverishly. And what she was feeling wasn’t merely lust, it was so much more. If she wasn’t cautious, she could easily lose her heart to this big South African. Something that could never happen. Besides the fact he was quite clear about not being interested in anything more than two weeks, she never wanted to give up control of her life again, like she’d done when she’d been married to Adam.

She’d blithely let him be in charge of their lives while she’d lost herself in her work. The feeling of complete and utter helplessness and panic, after his sudden demise, wasn’t something she’d ever wanted to experience again.

Like her mother, she was what Logan called a free spirit. She would forget about time while she was painting; mundane things like eating and sleeping didn’t matter all what much. Adam had made it easy for her to concentrate only on her work. But when he was gone, she quickly had to face reality. She had a little boy who needed her to be present and in charge.

A week ago, she still would’ve told anyone who’d have asked that she was actually managing her life quite well, thank you very much. Okay, she was forever looking for her phone and car keys, but at least she always knew where her son was. Except for the time he’d fetched Gavin to cook, of course.

And okay, she couldn’t cook, but she remembered Connor had to eat and he kept her grounded. It would be irresponsible of her to allow someone to disrupt their lives for two weeks even if he kissed her senseless.

Her phone bleeped. It was a message. From Gavin.

A cold shower is supposed to help. It doesn’t.

Her heart leapt. Her fingers were typing before she had time to think about what she was going to say.

I still can’t move.

Three dots appeared. And were gone. The next minute her phone was ringing. It was a video call. From Gavin. Her heart went ballistic. With an unsteady hand, she clicked on the button. Gavin filled her whole screen. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, his glorious, sexy six-pack on display on her phone. Right in front of her eyes. Oh. My.

“You’re sitting on the floor,” he said.

“I’m sitting on the floor.”

“Why?”

“Seemed like a good idea at the time.”

“Why?”

“My legs wouldn’t carry me.”

“Why?”

“Because you kissed me.”

A slow smile appeared. “Is that so?”

She groaned out loud. “Gavin...you are...you make me feel things...Oh, damn, I can’t believe I told you that! You’re making me crazy!”

“There is a very obvious solution to our problem.”

“What?”
