“There is no one to rescue you this time. Where’s lover-boy now?” Sneering, he began pulling her toward the exit of the building.

With all her might, she stepped on his foot, and with her last bit of energy, she pushed him away from her. He stumbled, giving her the opportunity to pull her arm out of his grip.

Out of breath, she quickly turned around to flee, but she was stopped by an immovable object. Reassuring arms folded around her and pulled her close.

“I’m sorry, Brooke, I know you don’t want me to take over, but that’s exactly what I’m going to do right now.”

Stunned and so relieved, she stared up into the last face she’d thought she would see that night—Gavin. He was here, just when she’d needed him most. Out of breath, she leaned into his embrace.

“Do we have a problem here?” someone asked behind her. Someone who sounded an awful lot like Lindsay’s husband, Blake.

She turned around, just in time to see Blake, Lindsay, Charlie, Logan, her mother, and Connor rushing forward.

“Mom!” Connor cried. “Surprise!”

While Brooke hugged her son, Blake got hold of Bill’s arm and steered him toward the exit. Sputtering and swearing, Bill looked back at Brooke over his shoulder, but without letting go of Brooke’s hand, Gavin took a step in his direction. Bill closed his mouth, his shoulders slumped.

“What on earth was that all about?” her mother asked.

“I...” Brooke began but the next minute, she sprinted for the bathroom. She was going to be sick.

CHAPTER 15

Dumbfounded, Gavinstared at the door of the restroom. Eleanor, with Connor clutching her hand, Charlie, and Lindsay had run after Brooke, but he had no idea what was going on.

Logan, who had also been staring at the door, rounded on him. “What the hell happened? Who was that guy?”

Tearing his gaze away from the door, Gavin told Logan what he knew about Bill.

“What the hell? Why didn’t Brooke tell me about it?”

“You know her—she insists on handling her own problems.”

Clearly frustrated, Logan sighed. “Yeah, I know. After Adam’s sudden passing, she struggled to get the estate settled, and since then...”

Gavin nodded. “She’s told me about it.”
