Brooke caught his arm. “Gavin! Breathe, babe, breathe. And please know, it’s totally okay of you’re not ready for this. I am, though. I’ve always wanted another baby, and now she or he will be yours, but of course, I’ll understand if you—”

“You’re carrying my baby?” he interrupted her, cupping her face.

“Well, we’re about to find out.”

He grabbed the box from her, and with her hand in his, marched toward the cashier. “I’m paying for this.”

“Okay.”

She was quiet all the way up the elevator back to the apartment. Nobody else was up yet, and he followed her to her room.

“So how does this work?” he asked as she took the box from him.

Not quite meeting his eyes, she turned away. “Give me a minute.” She disappeared into the bathroom.

He waited. And waited. What felt like hours later, he knocked on the door. “Brooke?”

The door flew open. She was holding something in her hand.

“What?”

Her eyes were filled with tears, her lower lip trembling. She lifted her hand and showed him a what looked like a white stick.

“What is this?” he asked, staring at the two small windows on a small screen on the stick. On the one was a vertical line and on the other a plus sign.

He inhaled sharply. “You’re pregnant? Is that what it says?”

She nodded, her eyes wet with tears. “That’s what it says.”

Joy exploded in his chest, and laughing, he picked her up. “You’re pregnant!”

Her arms slipped around his neck. “Does that mean you’re happy about it?”

“Of course, I’m happy about it—you’re carrying our baby!”

“You’ve said you’re never getting married.”

“I’ve said a lot of stupid things. But, babe, doing life with you, making babies with you—I’ve never thought—”

The door burst open. “Brooke...” Charlie, Lindsay, and Eleanor rushed in.

Reluctantly, Gavin put Brooke down. This damn interfering family was everywhere.

Eleanor was the first to speak. “You’ve bought a test?” Her hands were clutched together in front of her.

Gravely, Brooke nodded. “I have indeed.”

Charlie’s smile dropped. “You’re not pregnant?”

Brooke still had the white stick in her hand and showed it to Charlie. The next minute, three shrieks sliced the air.

“What the hell?” A tousled-looking Blake walked in, Logan on his heels.

“What’s going on?”

“Brooke’s pregnant!” Charlie sang, and hugged her husband.

“It’s one test,” Brooke said. “I’ll go and see the doctor when I’m home, but yeah, I think I’m pregnant.”
