“I didn’t leave you to go to Sarah, I—”

She put a hand on his lips. “I know. I’m sorry I hadn’t listened to them before, but I was so sure you were going back to her, and I didn’t...I couldn’t bear to hear that.”

Gavin cupped her face. “I’ll never leave you, Brooke. That was what I wanted to talk to you about last night. I—”

“Before you say another word, there is something I have to do first. Will you wait for me in my room?”

“No!” he cried out, his eyes a bit wild. “I’ve been walking the streets all of last night, missing you, wanting to be with you. I told you yesterday I never want to be without you again—don’t send me away. Whatever you need to do, I’ll do it with you.”

“Why?”

“Because I love you, damn it. I’ve told you before, I’m nobody’s hero, and I don’t know—”

Joy burst open inside of her, but she cut him short. “Don’t you dare say that ever again.”

He frowned. “That I love you? But...”

“That you’re nobody’s hero. You’re my hero. You’ve rescued me twice now even when I didn’t want your help. And that’s not all. You knew what to do when I burned my hand with the tea, you get me to places on time, you find my phone when I have no idea where it is, and you’re so good with Connor—he’s mad about you.” She tilted her head. “You really love me?”

He kissed her. Hard, urgently. “Yes, damn it, I love you. Probably since the first moment I laid eyes on you, but definitely since the first time I kissed you.”

“I’m so happy to hear that.”

“What about you?”

She grinned. “What about me?”

His eyes darkened. “The words, babe. I need to hear the words.”

“I love you, Gavin Wilson. I loved you since forever.”

A huge grin appeared on his face and he kissed her again. “That’s such a corny line.”

Laughing, she took his hand in hers. “I’ve got lots more. Are you happy?”

“I’m very happy.”

“You may not feel the same way in about fifteen minutes.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ll see.”

Gavin wasn’t sure whereBrooke was taking him, and he really didn’t care. He was with her, touching her, looking at her. Just a few minutes ago, he still had no idea whether she was ill...

“You still haven’t told me why you keep disappearing into bathrooms.”

They entered a convenience store. “We’re about to find out.”

“What are you talking about?”

But she ignored him while she looked through the display of goods. She reached out to pick up a small, rectangular box. “Here we go. This is what we need.”

His eyes dropped to the lettering on the outside. In big, black, bold letters was the brand name, and just below it, in red the words: Pregnancy Test.

He lost his breath.
