Brooke sniffed. “He’s so thoughtful. Oh, my goodness, I’m crying again!”

Charlie jumped up. “Dry those tears. The makeup artist and hairdresser will be here any minute now, and then we can’t cry again.”

“Makeup artist and hairdresser?” Brooke asked.

Lindsay grinned. “Everyone in town will be right on their heels to help with the wedding. Your mother may be interfering, but nobody can say no to her.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“I’m so happy for you.”

Brooke winked at Charlie and Lindsay. “Make sure someone does Mom’s hair and makeup, too, will you? Remember, she has a date.”

“Brooke!” her mother cried. “Don’t tell me...”

“Go on, make yourself pretty. I told you I’m getting you a date.”

“Why would you do that? And who in his right mind would want to be my date? I can’t believe you did that.”

“Believe it.” Charlie grinned. “We’ve learned from the best—you!”

“So who’s my date?” her mother asked again.

“Who do you think?”

“I can’t think of anyone...”

“A certain attorney who ‘adores’ you?”

“Guy?” her mom asked, her cheeks turning pink. “But that’s ridiculous. I can’t have a date. I’m way too old.”

They all burst out laughing.

Brooke hugged her mom. “You’ll never be old, trust me. Now go make yourself pretty.”

Mumbling, her mother left the room, a giggling Charlie and Lindsay following her.

Brooke quickly put on the chain and pendant before she phoned her fiancé.

––––––––

Bleary-eyed, Gavinlooked at Connor and the puppy on the lawn outside. The little boy had been wide awake at six o’clock that morning and had woken Gavin up by putting the yelping puppy on his face.

He rubbed his neck. He probably had too much to drink last night, and he’d had way too little sleep, but he couldn’t wait to see his bride. When he’d delivered her small gift earlier, he’d hoped to at least catch a glimpse of Brooke, but his sisters had quickly closed the door in his face, ignoring all his pleas.

The reason he wanted to see her was to reassure her of his feelings. There had been enough misunderstandings between them. He wanted her to be absolutely sure he loved her. Now he had to wait another few hours before he could tell her, damn it.

His phone rang. It was a video call from Brooke.

Excited, he answered. And nearly lost his last breath. He could only see her head and shoulders. His gift he’d dropped off earlier was around her neck, and it would seem that was all she was wearing. He caught his breath “Babe...what are you wearing?”

Her smile lit up his very soul. “Your present.”

He swore softly. “And that’s all?”

Her smile sent his blood roaring through his body. “Oh, yeah.”

“You’ll pay for this, you know that?”
