That was the real reason then. Money troubles were common, but we could overcome them.

I paused for a moment, thinking of the best way to help him. “There are ways to get scholarships and financial aid. I can help you with that.”

He shook his head sadly. “Those don’t apply to me.”

I looked at the other students who were lounging around in the courtyard, before staring at Massin again. “Why not?”

He looked away and didn’t answer.

“Massin, you need to tell me what is going on. I can help you, but only if you let me in.”

Finally, he relented and told me his story. “My family is wealthy,” he said with a humorless laugh. “My mother is one of the most successful businesswomen in our village. I’m afraid my parents have been experiencing some money issues. I don’t want to be a burden to them.”

“It’s natural to want to help your parents in their time of need. But you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your dreams for that. There are other ways to help them without giving up on your dreams.”

He closed his eyes. “Thank you, Thimsal. I appreciate your help. But I can’t take money away from those who need it more. Besides, my parents wouldn’t want anyone to know about their difficulties.”

“You deserve that money, Massin.” I put a reassuring hand on his arm. “There’s more money available than most people think. You will not take someone’s place away.”

He shook his head. “It would still make me feel bad.”

“Your education is important. Not just for you, but also your parents. They want you to succeed.”

“I..”

“The funds are publically available for anyone to apply to. But the process is complicated, and most people don’t know about it. I can help you with that, too.”

He looked at me, and I could see the hope in his eyes. “Do you think I have a chance?”

I smiled at him. “I know for a fact you do.”

As Massin and I talked, I could see the determination dawning in his eyes. He was struggling, but he wasn’t ready to give up yet. With a little help, he could get back on track and achieve his dreams.

“Now, let’s get started on those applications. If you provide me with your contact information, I’ll send an admissions representative to help you apply for our scholarships. There’s no need to be embarrassed about it. Scholarships help 10% of our students.”

He provided me with his contact information.

“Excellent.” I stood up and offered my hand to him. “Your future is awaiting you.”

As he walked away, I wondered how many other students were in a similar situation. I made a mental note to look into it further and to find out if there was anything I could do to help. Nobody should have to give up their dreams because of money issues.

I heard someone calling my name, and I turned to see the Caid walking toward me. His expression was grave, and I knew something was wrong.

“How can I help you?” I asked.

“Princess.” He bowed his head, and that was my clue that something was very wrong, “The Elves wish to see you.”

“When?”

“Now.”

They were here. The Elves were here.

The promised years turned into days.

Why? I did not know. But I knew it couldn’t be good. Elves took their time. They didn’t move fast or act rashly. If they were here now, it meant something big happened. Something we didn’t know about.

I glanced down at my clothing. A loose-fitting blue tunic with matching pants. It was hardly suitable for meeting Elvish representatives. Too informal and plain.
