“It’s going to be alright.” My mother hugged me tightly. “You’re going to be safe. I promise.”

I wanted to believe her, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen. That my vision was a warning of what was to come.

“I’m sorry. It all happened so fast,” I said, as I tried to calm my racing heart.

“It’s okay.” My mother stroked my hair. “You’re safe now.”

“It can’t be true. I’m not like you. I can’t see the future.”

“How would you explain that?”

“Symbolism.”

I wasn’t like my mother - able to see the future- but I knew what I saw wasn’t good. It was a warning sign. I just didn’t know what or when.

My mother frowned as she stared at me. “It’s definitely a symbolism. The end is near for our people. These visions are occurring more and more often. They have been for the last thirty years. The crown prince will turn our lands into lands of war and bloodshed.”

“You think I saw the future?”

My mother nodded. “What else could it be? You described an Elf coming towards you before you died. That is a bad omen. It means that our people are in danger.”

I swallowed. “You think he’s going to kill us all?”

It sounded impossible, but with the way things had been going, anything was possible.

My mother sighed and nodded her head. “I’m afraid so, my child..”

“It can’t be true,” I replied weakly. “I refuse to believe it.”

Refusing to believe it wouldn’t make it any less true, but I had to hold on to hope. If I didn’t, then what would I have?

My mother looked at me with pity in her eyes, before continuing in a soft voice. “Magic is in our blood, passed down from mother to daughter for centuries upon centuries. It is not something we only use. It has a mind of its own. What does your gut say?”

I thought about it for a second. “That something is going to happen, but I don’t know what or when.”

My mother nodded. “That is the best we can hope for right now. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.”

My gut told me we were at the beginning of the end, but the words wouldn’t come out of my mouth. I couldn’t say them aloud. If I did, it would make it all too real.

Instead, I hugged my mother tightly. We had to be strong. For ourselves and our people.

The end was coming, and there was nothing we could do to stop it.

Chapter 2

The Daughter of the Caid

Thud. Thud. Thud.

I jolted awake from my sleep, heart pounding in my chest as a loud banging resounded through my house.

I scrambled out of bed, barely taking the time to grab a robe before I ran towards the noise.

What was going on?

With shaking hands, I undid the lock and opened it, a crack, peeking out into the darkness. A familiar face beneath a baggy hoodie greeted me.

“Oh, thank magic,” I breathed, sagging in relief as I opened the door wider to let my uncle Mehdi in.
