They stayed in each other’s arms for a time, listening to the rhythmic tick of the clock and the crackling of the wood in the fire.

Finally, Selena scooted off Owen’s lap and onto the cushion next to him. “What are your plans for tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow morning, I am meeting Mr. Hamilton to go over the London business. Then in the afternoon Bran and I are calling on a few places. I may not be home for dinner.”

“I understand.” She did, but she didn’t like it.

“I won’t be out every night. Perhaps you could see what is playing at the theater and purchase tickets. I’m not sure what I like, so I’m willing to see anything.”

“That would be nice. It’s been ages since I’ve been to the theater.”

“Then I am even happier to oblige.”

At least Owen wanted to spend time with her, and he had gotten rid of that odious woman. Or at least he had told her so. When she was younger, Selena had been told that men have weaker constitutions than women when it comes to be being faithful. Her mother had told her to expect Owen to stray, but she was to be the consummate lady and never show her dislike that he might take another woman in his bed. Her job was to be the lady of the house and a gracious hostess.

Could a man be faithful? Sarah said Bran had taken no lovers since they had married. Perhaps Owen would be the same now. Only time would tell.

The next morning, Katie notified her that Owen had already left for the day, so Selena took her breakfast in her chambers. After eating and dressing, Selena had some errands to run before Sarah came for their shopping trip. It was a pleasant day, so she decided to walk. The air would help clear her mind.

Selena went to the theater and purchased tickets for the following night. As she walked past the British Museum, she saw there was to be a new exhibit on Italian painters. Perhaps that would interest Owen. Who knew? It was like discovering the man all over again.

Her errands complete, Selena strolled home. Her path took her by the military hospital where Owen had stayed. Had it only been a few weeks? In some ways it felt like a lifetime had passed.

“Lady Fernsby.” A familiar voice made her stop in her tracks. It was Dr. Lucas.

“Good morning, doctor.”

The physician smiled warmly. “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw you walk past just now. How are you and Lord Fernsby?”

“We are doing well, thank you.”

“Any luck with his memories?”

“Not much. He has recalled a small snippet but nothing more. That is why we are back in London, on your advice.”

“My advice?”

“Yes. You said to have him around familiar people and places. London is where he spent most of his time.”

“Well, you must bring him around sometime. I would like to see him again.”

“I’m sure he would be glad to see you. Good morning.”

Selena took a step when the doctor spoke again. “I almost forgot. A package came for his lordship.”

A package? Who would have sent Owen a package?

“If you have a minute, I can get it from my office.”

“Of course.”

Selena followed the older man inside the building. He asked her to wait in the lobby. It was just like the first time she had come. The walls were bare, save for a picture of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Everyone spoke in hushed tones. A few patients sat in wheelchairs. One soldier limped around on crutches, part of his leg missing. Selena winced. What these poor men had gone through and sacrificed. And for what? A piece of land on the other side of the world. Why did men have to go to war? It was a useless feat, only leaving devastation and pain on both sides. No one ever truly won.

“Here we are.” Dr. Lucas came through his office door carrying a small parcel. “It arrived a few days after you left. I was going to have it delivered to your estate, but this is a good happenstance.” He gave her the package.

“Thank you again, Dr. Lucas, for all you’ve done for Owen. He will be glad to know I saw you.”
