God, yes, this was what she wanted, to feel completely taken over by this man. Their bodies moved in a sensual rhythm, both wanting to find completion, yet knowing they could be discovered at any moment.

“You are the only woman I will ever want.” Owen rammed into her. “All I think about is you and how much I adore you, my sweet Selena.”

A warmth spread over her body, centering on her core, then it exploded into a crashing orgasm. She clenched her inner muscles around Owen’s cock. He buried his face in her neck just before a soft curse escaped his lips as he too found completion. They stood there, his warm breath caressing her neck as they calmed themselves from the fury of their coupling.

Owen’s words came back to her: You are the only woman I will ever want.

Again, shame nagged at the edge of her consciousness. Then it dawned on her. She had told Sarah that something seemed to keep her from completely giving herself to Owen. Now she knew what it was— secrets. The secrets from their past, about the baby she had lost, her affair with David, everything.

He deserved to know the truth. Hadn’t Owen just said he could tell her anything? Perhaps it was time she did the same. Selena was nervous, but in her heart, she knew it was the only path that might lead them to a future.

They separated and Selena rearranged her skirts while Owen straightened his attire before they emerged from their hiding spot. Neither said a word as they headed for the carriage.

“Could we go home?” Selena asked.

“Is something wrong?”

“It’s just—there are some things I would like to discuss with you, and I think it would be better to speak privately.”

Selena avoided Owen’s quizzical stare, worried he would see too much. If nothing else, her husband was very perceptive in reading her emotions.

“Of course.” Owen handed her into the carriage.

Selena focused on the passing city streets. Where to begin? Like most things, it was probably best to start at the beginning. She had already discussed their initial meeting and brief courtship, but Owen needed to understand the finer nuances of their relationship.

After they entered the townhouse, Selena ordered a light lunch to be served in the drawing room. She didn’t want the stiff formality of the dining room. Emotions might flare once she revealed her secrets, and it would be best not to have servants in earshot.

Once the footmen delivered the trays and the door closed, Selena turned toward Owen. Her hands were damp as she wrung them together. The weight on her chest was heavy as she began. “I know I have spoken about our first meeting and how you courted me.”

“You mean how I bullied you into marriage?”

“Yes.” Selena could not argue with that blunt comment. “But after our wedding, some things happened about which you should know.”

Owen narrowed his gaze. “Why are you telling me this now?”

“You are seeking answers, some of which I am the only one who can give them to you.”

“Why have you waited so long? Why not tell me weeks ago when I first returned?”

Damn the man for making this more difficult. Selena tried to remain calm. “At first I didn’t tell you because everything was so new. I figured you needed time to adjust to your new life. Then, when I saw how upset you became at the things I told you, I didn’t want to cause you more pain, and now…” Her eyes watered.

“And now?” Owen prompted.

Selena sniffled, then met his stare. “Now I realize I have started to have a—care for you.” Owen stood but did not go to her. “And if we are going to attempt to make a life together, you deserve to know some things, both about yourself and about me.”

Owen remained in place, not moving, barely breathing, waiting for her.

“After our wedding, we went straight to Stonegate. Your only priority, you told me, was to bed me and get me with child. You stayed for exactly a month, after which time you left for London, fairly certain you had gotten me with child.”

Even now Selena remembered the cold indifference of their coupling. She wouldn’t call it lovemaking. All she had done was lie there while Owen had planted his seed. There had been no words of love or tenderness. Owen hadn’t even removed his clothes. He’d done just enough to make sure the deed was done. Sometimes, as he left the room, he would look at her with disgust. It was those times when she hated him the most.

“Selena?”

She focused on Owen. For a minute, she forgot where she was and gasped, putting her arm in front of her, like she had to defend herself. Then she recalled where she was. This was the new Owen, the man who cherished her and spoke warmly to her. Selena lowered her arm.

“I’m sorry.”

“Selena, tell me something. Did I ever force you to share my bed?”
