“You were going to try to dupe me out of a property?” His voice was edged with ice. “No doubt you had help from Rodney, your conniving brother.”

There was the old Owen, in all his monstrous glory. Selena wanted to curse and rant at whatever force had allowed him to regain his memories. This couldn’t be happening. She had to fight for herself and for Owen. I must be strong.

With the greatest of effort, she stood. “I had to protect myself.”

“By stealing from me?”

“What other recourse did I have?” Her voice grew more confident. “I have nothing, so yes, Rodney helped me come up with a plan, in case—”

“In case I regained my memories?”

“Can you blame me? You were a brute.”

He winced. The new Owen couldn’t be completely lost. The old Owen never would have reacted to her words.

“When you first came home, I didn’t know what to expect. Every day, I woke up wondering if you would be like your old self, and each day when that didn’t happen, I began to have hope.”

His features softened.

“I had Rodney draw up those papers when I was scared and uncertain. Yes, I would have manipulated you for my own safety, but you can’t blame me, can you?”

Owen didn’t answer.

“As time went on and you didn’t get your memories back and we became closer, I began to see that maybe I didn’t have to leave, that we could have a life together.”

“What if I told you I would sign them today?”

“What?” His response took her off guard.

“I can sign them this instant, and you will be free of me, forever.”

Selena stilled. Was he being honest? Was Owen giving her a chance to live her own life? If she had any sense, she should take what he offered, but Selena hesitated. The man she loved was buried inside there, somewhere. Perhaps she just needed a way to find him.
