She cleared her throat. ‘You didn’t need to do that.’

‘It was the least I could do. It’s at the table, waiting for you.’

She followed his eyeline to a table where two drinks awaited. Was he for real?

‘Are you somehow expecting me to forget what’s happened, succumb to your less-than-impressive charms and join you for a drink?’ She scrunched her jacket lapels closer.

‘Well, I—’

‘Are you mad?’ She fixed him with a steely glare. ‘Do you thinkI’mmad?’

His mouth twitched. Was he trying not to laugh?

That did it. She hoisted up her bag. ‘If you think for one moment I’m—’

‘Oh, great. You’ve met.’

Beth stilled at the sound of Zac’s voice.

She turned to him. ‘I beg your pardon?’

‘This is my uncle Matt.’ Zac must have sensed the tension radiating off them, because his expression turned wary. ‘Is everything okay?’

Beth couldn’t quite compute what was happening. ‘This… this man is your uncle?’

Zac’s eyes flitted between them. ‘Er… yes.’

‘Your uncle? As in… your biological uncle?’

Zac’s eyebrows lifted. ‘He’s my dad’s half-brother. Have I missed something?’

You could say that.

Zac turned to his uncle. ‘This is Megan’s sister, Beth. The woman I was telling you about.’

‘That much I’d gathered,’ he said, supressing a smirk. ‘Matt Hardy. Nice to meet you.’

Beth refused to let go of her lapels. ‘I would say likewise, but we both know that’d be a lie.’

He lowered his hand.

Zac looked mortified. ‘Er… shall we sit down?’

Beth was torn. The idea of sitting down with this man to engage in small talk about weddings filled her with dread. Especially since she was minus a shirt and bra. But it wasn’t Zac’s fault, and it seemed cruel to make him suffer for his uncle’s shortcomings.

‘I can’t stay long,’ she said, figuring a short stay was all she could cope with. She still had a tingling chest, after all.

Following Zac over to the table, she noticed a few admiring glances from a group of girls seated nearby. She couldn’t blame them. Zac was extremely good-looking. Tall, slim, with his black hair groomed into a fashionable quiff. He wouldn’t have looked out of place on a catwalk.

They arrived at the table and sat down – Zac on one side, his long legs taking up all the space, and Matt on the other, leaving her with the seat squashed against the wall.

Matt’s thigh pressed against hers. She tried to shift away, but the wall blocked her escape. Her day sure wasn’t getting any better.

‘Thanks so much for coming,’ Zac said, looking between them. ‘I really appreciate it.’

‘No problem.’ Matt smiled. ‘Happy to help. What is it you need?’

‘So, the thing is… Megan’s flying out to Greece this Sunday to start filming a new project.’
