“So, you’re a pilot?” I ask, wanting to hear this intriguing man talk some more.

“I was in the Air Force,” he says as he finishes carving his sharp spear and tosses the rock on the ground. “Now, I just fly for fun.”

“What do you do for work?”

He looks around the jungle with a shrug. “I guess nothing anymore. I’m a wild man now.”

“Yes, you are,” I whisper as I glance at his big muscular arms.

“I started my own business making telescopes,” he says. “Pretty random, I know. But it’s always been a lifelong dream.”

“Cool,” I say, wondering what I can say next to sound smart. “I loved looking at telescopes in science class. All of the amoeba and… other stuff.”

“Those are microscopes.”

“Right,” I say as I squeeze my eyes shut. “Telescopes are for doctors to listen to your heart. That’s what I meant. Everyone knows that.”

“Those are stethoscopes,” he says with a sly smile.

I laugh as I shake my head in disbelief. My game is non-existent. I must have left it on the cruise ship.

“Never mind me,” I say with a chuckle. “I’ve been talking to plants for the past nine months.”

“Understandable,” he says, watching me with a twinkle in his eye.

“They think I’m a genius, by the way.”

We come up to the lagoon and I look at his face as he sees it for the first time. It’s truly stunning. The water is pure turquoise and the lush green jungle around it is breathtaking. There are rocks to dive off of and no matter where you are, you can see straight down to the bottom. Two streams run into it from the side of the mountain, keeping it fresh and cool. I love it here. Italmostmakes this dreaded island worth it.

“Wow,” he whispers as he looks around. He surveys the area slowly before his eyes settle on me. “The beauty on this island is unparalleled. Everything is so gorgeous.”

“Thank you,” I say before I realize he’s not talking about me. “I mean, it is. Yes. Very pretty.”

God, you’re such a dolt.

I roll my eyes as he steps up to the water.

My eyes slide over to his hard carved arms as he raises the spear, aiming for something swimming underneath.

“You’re not going to be able to catch anything,” I say as I sit on a rock and watch him. “Those things are so fast. Once, I tried to throw a rock at one and—“

He launches the spear down and immediately pulls it back out. A big fish is wiggling at the end of it.

“You caught one!”

He looks at me over his shoulder with a smile.

“But how are we going to cook it?” I ask as my spirits sink. “Do you have a lighter?”

“No,” he says as the fish stops moving. “But I bet we can figure something out.”

We.

I guess it’s we from now on.

Might not be so bad.

In fact, this might even be a good thing.
