“Can we speak to your daughter?” the younger cop asks me.

“No,” Kourtney replies. “We’re not leaving a paper trail regarding her injury.”

“Neal Copper assaulted a child. When we track him down, we’ll want him to stand in front of a judge over that.”

“Are you twelve?” Kourtney asks the thirtyish man as his fiftyish partner rolls his eyes. “I feel like you’re on your first day and planning to show me the picture of your girl back home.”

“What?”

“You’re a moron, kid,” she mutters. “If we report the asshole injured her, we’ll get Child Services involved. It could mean home inspections. It could mean eyes on Nomad’s business. Are you asking us to invite trouble so you can punish a man who isn’t coming back?”

“You don’t know if he’ll return. He left his rig.”

“I feel like you’re just fucking brain damaged,” Kourtney bitches, making the older cop chuckle at his partner. “This guy is looking at child support for five fucking kids, you dumb-shit. He’s planning to start over. With a new ID, he’ll have a new rig and plenty of women to beat. The motherfucker isn’t coming back. So, no, you won’t be allowed to hound a nine-year-old with a broken arm.”

“I was trying to help.”

When the cop looks to Silas, he finds the cold eyes of a killer. Glancing at me, I think the younger man hopes for an ally. I just submissively lower my gaze. I’m not involving myself in the current pissing match between Kourtney and the police.

“I should tell you,” says the older cop. “Copper’s family is all over the station, claiming he’s been murdered.”

“Who do they think killed him?” Kourtney asks with complete seriousness.

“Nomad.”

“Do you know how I know they don’t really believe that?” Kourtney asks, holding the men’s gazes. “Because if they thought a biker club offed someone in their family, they’d be afraid for their own safety. But they’re not.”

“I don’t know,” the older cop says and shrugs. “These people seem really stupid. It’s possible they haven’t realized accusing the club of criminal acts would be dangerous.”

Kourtney looks at Silas who shrugs. “I’ve only met them once, and they were pretty fucking stupid.”

“Well, I think they’re greedy,” Kourtney grumbles and picks up her phone. “Neal Copper was always loaning money to his freeloading family. Now, their ATM has run off. That’s why they’re kicking up a stink.”

The older cop nods and says he’ll contact us if there’s information. The younger cop mostly looks irritated over getting razzed. Since Kourtney refuses to look up from her phone, he won’t receive any apologies.

Silas waits until the police exit before stroking my belly. “Are you good?” he asks, editing his wording while we have Kourtney around.

Nodding, I glance at her. “Silas said you’re helping with the Brooklyn situation.”

“Yes. I think I have a way to fix that.”

Silas frowns when Kourtney doesn’t continue. She lifts her index finger for him to wait. Finally, she sets her phone aside and sighs.

“I’m stuck on a Pet Rescue Saga level, and it’s driving me fucking crazy.”

“What about the kid?” he grumbles, losing his temper.

Glaring at him, she asks, “Do you remember the time you went down on me in high school, and I farted?”

As Kourtney laughs, Silas looks ready to leap across the room and pound on her.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“I’m a little grossed out, actually. First, Ruin got whipped. Now, you’ve trapped yourself with blondie over here.”

“You’re pissing me off.”

“Is that what your glaring is about?”
