‘Ed?’ I ask.

‘Yes?’

‘Umm, you could stay with me, if you like?’ The words seem to come out before I’ve even had a chance to think about what I’m saying.

He turns to me and cups my face in his hands. As our mouths meet again, fireworks erupt throughout my body. When we finally break apart, he fastens his seat belt, I start the engine and turn right out of the car park, towards Tonbridge.

EPILOGUE

THE MALDIVES – 18 MONTHS LATER

I’m lying on a sunbed, reading my book, when I sense a shadow falling across me.

‘Mrs Wells, I presume?’ Ed’s voice says.

I glance at the ring on my left hand, sparkling in the sun, and then up at Ed.

‘That’s me,’ I reply.

Ed ended up staying the whole weekend with me after Mads brought him back into my life that Friday evening. From that point on we spent all the time we could together, either at my flat or in his very swanky bachelor pad in London. After six months, he proposed, and of course I said yes. We explored various places to live, and eventually settled on Sevenoaks, as it’s close to London for Ed, and not too bad a commute for me either. Ed sold his flat for an exorbitant sum and we were able to buy our house, which is close enough to the station that Ed can walk there. Mum and Dad like having us close by, but are very careful about not overcrowding us.

Ed’s PA never warmed to me, and she never admitted to throwing away my letter or deliberately mislaying my message. It was obvious to me, the first time I met her, that she was madly in love with him, but he couldn’t see it and we had quite a heated debate, which I would have lost had she not subsequently confirmed my suspicions by resigning the day after Ed and I announced our engagement. His new PA, Rosie, is lovely and, on the rare occasions I need to ring him at work, I usually end up talking to her for longer than I do him.

My hopes for a simple wedding were dashed by Mum and Mads, who turned full bridezilla on me. It was a beautiful day, though. Ed looked amazing (again) in his morning coat, and there were lots of humorous references in the speeches to the fact that I was the bride who actually turned up.

Ed flops down on the sunbed next to mine.

‘I’ve booked all the water sports,’ he tells me. ‘I’ve spread them out a bit, so we don’t overload ourselves like we did in Antigua.’

I smile and lean across to kiss him.

‘I’ve been thinking,’ I tell him. ‘And I’ve decided that, as nice as your and Sarah’s honeymoon was, I prefer this one.’

‘And why is that?’ he asks.

‘Well, because this is actually my honeymoon rather than someone else’s, I’m married to the most amazing man and, best of all, there’s no pervy Dave with his bloody camera!’

He laughs and takes me in his arms. ‘I can probably call Dave, if you’re missing him.’

‘I don’t think so,’ I reply. ‘I have plans for you that would probably make even Dave blush.’

‘Really? And what might they be?’

‘You’ll have to wait and see,’ I tell him as I take his hand and we set off towards our room.
