“Kevin is appearing to be deep into some delusions. He started escalating his behaviour quite rapidly which includes threats to the woman he attacked to get in here. However, he did not threaten himself or me directly,” I explain to the staff with a sad shake of my head. “Anyway, I’ll pass this along to the prosecution and put it in my report. If you could also send me your report to add to my notes, that would be greatly appreciated.”

“Will do, Detective James. Have a wonderful rest of your day. I hope to see you again,” she says with a smile, handing me a business card from the front desk. On the back is a handwritten phone number with the name Alicia underneath it. “That’s so we can touch base for the reports. You can also use it to call me. You know, if you wanted to.”

“Thank you, Alicia. I just may take you up on that.”Not. I’ll be long fucking gone.“Have a good one.”

With one more sickeningly sweet smile for the nurse, I turn on my heel and walk out of the psychiatric hospital. My job is finally done and with that, I’m gone. Using a contact I made outside of the Dealga Organization, I made plans to completely disappear from everyone, including them.

I’m done. I’m so fucking done.

Jumping into my car, I pull out on the road with a single track mind. Get home, get my shit, go. Any extra time I spend waiting to leave is another minute I risk getting roped into something else only to lose my window of escape.

The drive feels extremely fast since my mind went into auto-pilot. Before I know it, I’m pulling into my driveway and shutting off the engine. There’s a weird silence and unease that falls on me as my anxiety over what I’m about to do hits me.

A shrill ringing fills the silence of the car, startling me with a jolt. Looking down at my phone in the middle cup holder, I groan at the name flashing on the screen and slap my hands against the steering wheel.

Answering the call begrudgingly, I school my tone into professional ambivalence. “Hey, Rhys. What can I do for you?”

His anger comes through the phone like a punch to the face, making me clench my hands in annoyance. I will never cease to despise this motherfucker and his self-righteous, do-good attitude. Poor fucking Rhys, always getting caught up doing the right thing. If only he knew what it was like on the other side of the coin.

“Jarrod, he was fucking living in our attic! How the fuck did you miss that?”

A smile pulls at my lips, trying to break through the calm, cool demeanor I’m trying to maintain. The truth is I didn’t miss that fact, I just made sure my team did. If they weren’t so fucking head over heels for the bitch with the death sentence attached to her, they may have caught it too. God, I wish I could see their faces in two months when Kevin breaks the fuck out. The sweet terror and unbridled anger would be sweeter than almost anything. My freedom being the only thing sweeter.

Instead of giving in to my thoughts, I settle in to listen to his ranting. When he mentions gathering evidence, I grin wickedly at the silver platter Rhys just handed me to piss him off even more. Now, I get to deliver the news that Kevin won’t be going to jail but will stay nice and comfy where he is.

Well, for the next two months at least.

Chapter Two

Alayna

Two Months Later

It’s been a little over two months since the night Kevin attacked us and went into custody. The guys were all pissed when Jared informed Rhys that Kevin wouldn’t be going through a trial after the prosecution offered a plea deal for him being mentally ill. At first I was too, but I’ve come to the realization that while I hate what he did to us, he needs the help. Kevin started as a victim in the same house that broke me. I can’t look past that fact no matter how fucked up what he did to us was.

Rhys has been working as a manager in a security company since about a month ago, and that seems to have eased his tensions a little bit. The company works with both security technology as well as security teams. He’s made the house into a fortress that not even a squirrel could sneak into.

Adam and Riggs have been mostly normal, aside from agreeing with Rhys about every little security upgrade and then roping me in with how much safer it’ll be for the babies. They know how to pull on my protective instincts to get me to agree with them. I can’t really fault them for it, since logically I know it’s safer for all of us and their protectiveness is no different than my own.

They’ve all been extra attached since that night two months ago, though. They claim it has nothing to do with feeling overprotective and everything to do with how much they love me. Their love is apparent in every little thing they do, but so is their over-protectiveness. With Kevin locked up, you would think they would have to give sometime soon.

“Hey, Alayna!” Ashe, the head of the construction company I hired for the bar, says as he walks up. “I’ve got a couple changes I need to run past you and get your agreement on.”

“Oh, sure thing, Ashe.” I smile, stepping away from the paperwork I was going over in the corner of the torn apart building. “What’s going on?”

Ashe sighs deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose under his protective eyewear. “The supplier we decided on for the scarlet oak wood for the bar and tables is not going to be able to fulfill our order by the March deadline. We have two options. We stick to the deadline and go with the second supplier we liked that was about a ten percent increase in cost or we push back our finish deadline and stick with this supplier.”

“Go with the second supplier and stick with the deadline,” I answer decisively without much thought. “With being pregnant, I can’t afford to have many delays in the completion.”

“Fair enough.” He nods, an easy smile on his face. “One last thing and then I’ll get out of your hair. The electrician is coming tomorrow to start on getting all the wiring and lighting up to code before we start putting the walls and ceiling up again. They’re going to need a signature from both of us after the work has been completed and inspected as per their company policy. Do you want daily progress reports so you’re aware when you’ll be needed back, or do you want me to contact you once it’s done?”

“A bit of both? Give me a progress report when they think they’re about a day out from being done and then let me know when they’re actually done. This way I have a small heads up and can rearrange my schedule if needed.”

Ashe nods, writing down my answers on his notepad. “You got it, boss.”

“Thanks, Ashe. I’ll be wrapping up in about ten minutes and heading out. Give me a call if anything else comes up,” I say with a soft smile. “If you can’t reach me, you know where the numbers are for my guys.”
