"Do you think they'll be good to come home in a few days?"Adam asks as we walk.

Rubbing a hand against my eyes, I shrug. “I honestly don’t know. I’ve never been great with medical stuff. It’s why I decided on the police force and not firefighting or EMT.”

“That’s fair,” Adam replies with a laugh. “I guess I’ll keep my questions to myself about Riggs then.”

“At least don’t ask me,” I joke, shaking my head. “This place is crawling with doctors and nurses, though. You could ask them.”

“Pfft, I don’t think so. They freak me out.” Adam glances back and forth in the hallway with wide eyes. “I don’t trust anyone with as much fascination with the human body as they have.”

Groaning, I laugh despite my better judgment and thank my lucky stars we’re finally here so Adam can pester Lay instead of me. Pushing open the door, I pause when I don’t see Lay sitting with Dot.

Adam pushes past me into the room then stops and looks around. “Where’s Lay?”

Dot looks up from her book in confusion. “Was she supposed to be here? I’ve been in the room for about twenty five minutes and she hasn’t been here the entire time.”

“She never showed up in the NICU,” I mumble, already pulling out my phone to call her. The call goes straight to voicemail, so I hit the button and try again. “Her phone is going straight to voicemail.”

“Where would she go?” Adam pulls out his phone to make sure she didn’t message him. “It’s not like her to disappear without telling anyone.”

“Unless she didn’t leave on her own,” I surmise, rubbing a hand over my mouth. “Do you think that motherfucker got his hands on her?”

“Kevin?” Adam asks, his tone changing from concern to anger in a split second. “If he did, I will make him fucking pay.”

“We need to call Detective Mercer and see if he has any idea where Kevin would take her,” I say, pulling up his number on my phone. “He said they had a lead on Kevin. Let’s hope that’s still true.”

“Detective Mercer,” Paul answers the phone, his voice gruff as usual.

“It’s Rhys Larsen. I think Kevin’s taken Lay and I need to know where they could be,” I speak quickly, grabbing Adam’s phone to write down anything he passes on.

“Woah, slow down. Kevin took Lay? From where?” Paul shoots back, anger in his tone. “This is something that gets reported. You aren’t on the force anymore, Larsen.”

“From the hospital and we don’t know for sure, just that it has been more than twenty five minutes since she’s been missing.” I throw Adam his phone back and pinch the bridge of my nose. “I know I’m not on the force anymore, but if you think I’m going to sit back while my girl is in the hands of that psycho, you’re kidding yourself.”

“All we know is what he’s most likely driving right now. There was a car that went missing from the junkyard around the time that Hudson saw him there. We think he’s driving a light blue two thousand four Nissan Altima. The license plates are stolen, but we’ve been keeping track of the ones reported,” Paul explains. “Let me call bylaw and see what I can find on the whereabouts. We’ll find her, Rhys.”

“We fucking better find her, Paul.” Hanging up the phone, I look at Adam with sheer determination that’s driving my adrenaline higher than I ever thought it could go. “Let’s go find our girl.”

Chapter 23

Chapter Twenty-Three

Alayna

WithhowangryIwas when I started driving here, the change to fear and sadness is surprising. No matter which way I look at this, it’s tragic that it’s come this far.

Kevin is barely an adult by society standards and somehow he’s stalking and obsessing over not just my death, but the death of those around me. This shouldn’t have ever gotten this far. Why did no one help him as a lost, mentally unstable child?

The answer is the same way no one helped me or Declan. Society doesn’t care about children, they only pretend to. Far too many slip through the cracks until they conform to society or end up in a prison cell. It’s the way of the foster system at least.

Driving around the back of the building, I let myself in through the brew house. Rhys put a gun inside the drawer of my desk for protection on the day of my birthday party. I shook my head at the time, but I guess he had a better idea of how this was going to go down than I ever did.

Grabbing the gun, I slip it in the waistband of my jeans, making sure the safety is still on for now. I don’t like guns, I much prefer using my fists and feet. Still, you shouldn’t come at an armed man that wants to kill you with feet and hands, not unless you absolutely have to.

“I’m here,” I call out, my voice surprisingly calm sounding. At least right now. “You wanted to end this so where the fuck are you?”

“Right here,” he sneers, popping up on the other side of the bar with a gun in his hand. “Have you made your peace? Are you prepared to die?”

Shaking my head, I try to appeal to the scared child I hope is still inside of him. “No, I’m not. We’re both far too young to die, Kevin. There needs to be another way. You don’t have to walk the path of your father, you can make your own path.”
